Florida GOP lawmakers pass bill to limit discussion of race

The Republican-dominated Florida Legislature gave Gov. Ron DeSantis another victory in what some call his political culture war by sending him a bill Thursday that will limit discussions teachers and businesses can have about race.

Black senators delivered impassioned speeches against the bill, and there was little Republican debate for it. But in a year DeSantis is seeking reelection and positioning himself for a 2024 presidential run, Republicans were united in backing the proposal the governor has said is a top priority. It passed on a 24-15 party line vote.

The bill reads in part, “A person should not be instructed that he or she must feel guilt, anguish, or other forms of psychological distress for actions, in which he or she played no part, committed in the past by other members of the same race or sex.” It applies to K-12 public schools, but not universities.

Black senators said the bill will have a chilling effect on how African American history is taught because teachers will fear lawsuits if students' parents object to how they present subjects like slavery, segregation, lynchings and the continued presence of racism in the United States.

Have they prohibited the legislature from ever again discussing the issue?

And is there mile-wide wiggle room for people of the opposite race or sex to feel guilty?

And Desantis is a tyrant, just like his identical twin, Greg Abbott in Fascist Texas.

stupider and stupider. Every day another ludicrous bill gets passed that has little chance of being implemented or followed. Betting most teachers will ignore these new bills and righties will forget them once the press stops talking about them. Meanwhile, the state has so many other issues that need be addressed.

It is like the rich think they need poor and repressed workers, nah if all doing OK, robots and automation would be the normal for the grossest of jobs or just DIY like everyone in the times before we became spoiled brats?

THIS IS ALL GREED CONSEQUENCES, unchecked for far too long, just the fact the federal minimum wage aint changed since 2009 says all I need to know....

Show us where on the map (40 * 7.25) = food/clothing AND shelter and even a modicum of feel good about it?

The entertainment industry needs to start cranking out documentaries and educational films. Find some benefactors to bankroll it and put it on the internet. Show kids what their government is not letting them see and say so.
