America has found a new secret weapon in Russia - the "Big Mac".

I guess they hadn't heard? McDonald's closed their stores because their leader, Mr Putin, invaded a neighboring country and is committing war crimes.

Now, they are really angry.

At one place, there was a line of about 500 people that did not know MacDonald's was closed.

Hold the pickle, hold the lettuce...

American restaurants can't function in a country with whom we are in a state of near-war. It's not to "scare" you, lady, it's to show you that actions have consequences. Sheesh.

McDonald’s feeds a lot of poor people, too. Even as late as 2018, when I stopped eating fast food, I could get 6 piece chicken McNuggets, fries and large coke for $6.67. Couldn’t make a tuna salad sandwich at home for much less than that.

Add some mayonnaise (I keep it simple, but added onion or relish will be less that a quarter), two slices of bread that come to thirty cents if you've bought pricey bread.

I don't consume soft drinks, so I have no idea the cost of a coke, but that crap is terrible for you anyway. Substitute potato chips for the fries, and your meal should be under $5.00.

My goal is to have most of my meals cost less than two dollars, and even with increased prices I'm finding it's possible to stay within that limit. Especially when I make a soup and freeze up a bunch of portions to consume later.

be able to see that fixing a meal at home is vastly cheaper than eating out.

I understand the soda addiction. I've had it. In the distant past my preferred soda was Dr. Pepper. My younger son was a true addict, who would drink soda in preference to anything else at all. I realized this wasn't a good thing and decided to eliminate soft drinks from our household. I'll admit to being quite miffed. I didn't understand why I had to give up my favorite soft drink just because of him. I grumbled inside, but never let him know how annoyed at him I was.

Over time, I adapted. To this day, some 30 years later, I always order water at a restaurant. Okay, so I also often order a beer or wine or mixed drink, but never a soft drink, I promise you. As cheerfully as I consume alcohol, I honestly think it is less harmful in the long run than sugared drinks. Or artificially sweetened drinks, which are truly an abomination. Those tend to leach calcium from bones, and so are truly terrible. Again, water is better.

When I'm in a grocery store I'm often astonished at how many people have multiple cartons of soft drinks in their carts. I don't even know just how many cans those contain, but lots, I know.

Somewhat aside, I don't understand why anyone would buy an iced tea at the grocery store. Honestly, it is not that hard to make your own iced tea. Making your own Coke or Pepsi or Dr Pepper or any other soft drink is a different story, and so I can understand why you buy those. But plain iced tea? Do you not have running water in your home? Are tea bags totally unavailable where you are? Really? They are? How did I miss that? Oh, well. Making iced tea is almost as easy as running water from your tap, really. Again, I get why you'd buy soft drinks, but there are a lot of things people buy that they could easily make at a fraction of the cost. We're being bamboozled into thinking the convenience of buying certain foods is easier than making it ourselves, and I'm honestly appalled. It honestly doesn't take that much time to make things from scratch.

is not perfect but it’s safe and drinkable. I agree, make tea at home. Tastes better, is way cheaper and far less wasteful of bottles or cans.

As for cooking food cheaply at home? Vegetables and fruit are very expensive. Meat (which I rarely eat anymore) is very expensive. Fish is very expensive. Unfortunately or fortunately, I drink a lot of milk. Not cheap. It’s a substitute for soda. The deal I made with myself is that if I eat or drink something with lots of calories, it has to have some nutritional value. Eat protein bar (sweet) with at least 13 grams of protein. Drink milk rather than soda. Absolutely no alcohol - expensive, loaded with calories and ZERO nutrients.

It’s a struggle.

And cooking at home from scratch is still cheaper, often vastly cheaper, than eating out. Especially if you make things that can then be frozen for future meals. Which is how I get my typical food cost down to $3.00, often less, per meal.

I can go to the grocery store, spend $20-$30, and come out with ingredients for a week or more of meals.

Paying someone else to do the prep, such as buying already cut up fruits or vegetables makes no sense to me. Same with buying meats there are marinated or have veggies included likewise makes no sense.

While food has gotten more expensive lately, I still see plenty of good prices at my grocery store. Personally, I've never understood the appeal of protein bars. The rare times I've looked at them, they seem to have a lot of sugar and are rather expensive for what you get.

One less country to which he can flee. No way he's going to escape to a place where he can't get Big Macs and Fish Delights. I hear KFC is bailing out, too. Nothing for him to eat there.
