Senate Energy Chairman Joe Manchin called on the Biden administration to use the Defense Production Act if necessary to rush completion of a stalled pipeline through his state to help Europe replace Russian natural gas supplies.
Manchin said the 303-mile Mountain Valley Pipeline, which crosses his home state of West Virginia into Virginia, could transport two billion cubic feet a day and be up and running in four to six months.
Its the quickest thing that we can get, its more energy into the market thats going to be needed, Manchin said of the mostly-built pipeline. Ive been preaching to the heavens for a long time on this one. It can be done with the Defense Production Act.
The act gives the president emergency authority to control domestic industries.

(35,454 posts)A White House official said Tuesday that U.S. oil and gas companies should increase production if they want, pushing back against executives whove criticized Biden administration energy policies as prices soar.
Prices are quite high, the price signal is strong. If folks want to produce more, they can and they should, White House National Economic Council Deputy Director Bharat Ramamurti said in a Bloomberg Television interview.
Ramamurti said there are 9,000 unused leases that the U.S. government has provided for oil and gas production and, people are free to use them if theyd like to.
