"SNIP.......
On the economic side, I have to admit that both the Wests willingness to impose sanctions and the effectiveness of those sanctions have surprised just about everyone, myself included.
Still, economic officials and independent experts in Russia should have warned Putin in advance that Fortress Russia was a deeply flawed idea. It shouldnt have required deep analysis to realize that Putins $630 billion in foreign exchange reserves would become largely unusable if the worlds democracies cut off Russias access to the world banking system. It also shouldnt have required deep analysis to realize that Russias economy is deeply dependent on imports of capital goods and other essential industrial inputs.
But again, would you have wanted to be the diplomat telling Putin that the West isnt as decadent as he thinks, the banker telling him that his vaunted war chest will be useless in a crisis, the economist telling him that Russia needs imports?
The point is that the case for an open society a society that allows dissent and criticism goes beyond truth and morality. Open societies are also, by and large, more effective than closed-off autocracies. That is, while you might imagine that there are big advantages to rule by a strongman who can simply tell people what to do, these advantages are more than offset by the absence of free discussion and independent thought. Nobody can tell the strongman that hes wrong or urge him to think twice before making a disastrous decision.

(12,462 posts)"Strongman" psychopaths any power or trust over anything whatsoever.. as for the people who like authoritarian rule, they will always be traitors to democracy.
They are authoritarian personality types that are a psychopaths toys willingly.
A bunch of servile insecure frightened losers who can't do anything on thier own or even think for themselves without permission from some sociopath asshole they think is better than they are.
Pathetic toxic people who secretly want to be absolved and shielded from thier abusive actions and treachery by thier dear leader..
A psychopath loser with no empathy who just likes seeing the losers jump, submit and bow down, to them and give them money, even die for him and do whatever the
"leader "sociopath says.
Its a toxic abusive symbionic relationship with psychopaths and authoritarians.
And no therapy does not help them. It's not a real mental illness causing this shit. It is because of who they are,the kind of people they are.
And sociopaths and thier servile followers are the biggest threat to humanity next to climate change, pushed by greedy billionaire sociopath oil magnates.

(46,503 posts)China must be in some degree of shock as they watch Putin's debacle unfold, and see the world's harsh response to autocratic strong arming, invasion, threats of nuclear war.
The same playbook China planned to use. Both China and Russia hoped to shift world power and be the sole superpowers, establishing autocratic global rule. (The US GOP is working on their behalf here in the US.)
We can see Beijing is now scrambling and all over the map. Worried about their own liability with mutual Russian investments and assets. So distancing themselves from Putin. Making sympathetic sounds about the Ukrainians. At the same time spreading Putin propaganda.

(54,295 posts)They think that if it has a (D) before or after it, it most be opposed--as vehemently as possible. With money for propaganda, shouting on their media, and relentless assaults on truth and sanity by their politicians and owned journalists, they not only choose to watch Fox and listen to National Hate Radio, they choose to actually BELIEVE what they hear.
The trouble is that many things that people with a (D) before or after their name advocate are not only good for America, they are good for the very constituencies these Republicans represent. They are often bad, sometimes very bad, for our adversaries. They don't care. If the person ordering the firing squad to shoot them is a Republican, that is preferable over the person trying to tell the shooters to stand down if that person is a Democrat. "He's a Democrat! Don't listen to him! SHOOT me!"
Therefore, stimulus packages that would benefit people in depressed economic areas--even Republican depressed economic areas--are dissed by Republican politicians, who twist themselves and their "logic" into worse contortions than a collapsed strand of overcooked spaghetti trying to explain why good is bad. Conversely, their propagandists make an effort that would rival Göbbels in the spring of 1945, trying to tell the German people how well the war was going for Germany. They try to explain why an underdog, patriotic Ukrainian president is less worthy of support than a Russian imperialist, unreformed communist secret policeman who is both a militarist and a sadist.
Is it just because Biden stands up to Putin, and Trump wouldn't? Well, YES. Just because of that. Biden is a Democrat. If Biden were to offer them pollution-free prosperity for life, and Trump would offer them bankruptcy, homelessness and uninsured ill health for life, they would choose Trump's offer, because it didn't come from a Democrat.
Is the right wing media to blame for this? Obviously. But so are its followers, who choose to believe that Jack's beanstalk really DID extend to the sky, rather than accept that no, it didn't, and there is no goose that lays golden eggs. We can discuss the how, the why, and what to do about it for the rest of our lives, but we had better accept that this is the way things are NOW, and respond accordingly.
