https://www.thedailybeast.com/wilton-manors-spring-breakers-overdose-on-cocaine-laced-with-fentanylEmergency responders were called out to a horrifying scene in Wilton Manors, Florida, on Thursday after six young people on Spring Break overdosed on cocaine laced with fentanyl, according to officials.
Local10 reports that Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to an emergency at a short-term holiday rental late Thursday afternoon and found six people suffering from overdoses.
Chief Stephen Gollan reportedly said: There were multiple people in cardiac arrest in the front yard... Narcan was deployed as quickly as possible.
The six were rushed to hospital, where one reportedly had to be intubated and remains in critical condition, according to Gollan. This is extremely alarming to us, said the chief. Wilton Manors police and the Broward Sheriffs Office deputies have opened an investigation.

(4,874 posts)A batch of fake Oxycodone pills hit the streets, laced with Fentanyl. Also in Portland.
As tragic as is it, maybe the total unreliability of street drugs will discourage newbies from trying them in the first place. But if the Florida story is an indication, word hasn't gotten out yet.
RIP

(13,417 posts)Drug dealers do not want to murder their clients. They simply want their customers to become addicted and dependent on the drug so they will continue buying it. Whoever sold that cocaine was a complete idiot looking to make a quick buck via a ridiculously low grade product cut with fentanyl.

(13,417 posts)They would much rather have repeat customers as that greatly reduces the risk that purchaser works in law enforcement. An addicted and frequent customer who needs their product is exactly what they want as it provides them with a steady income source with less than normal risk.

(13,417 posts)Sales are less likely to occur if people think the dealer is pushing a bad product. It's basic economics even if none of the parties are versed in economic theory. People who make and sell a bad product go out of business, regardless of the business.
Yes, it is possible the dealer had a limited supply and tried to cut it in order to increase the supply and make more money. If so, they went about it the wrong way, hence my original statement about the dealer being an idiot.

(14,719 posts)There is a phenomenon where hard core addicts will seek out drugs that caused someone to OD. They believe it is stronger and they will need less to get their fix.
Some asshat dealers will callously poison a few doses just to cause od's, and then reap the rewards as others seek out that supply.
It's just business. (sarcasm)

(11,296 posts)(or quality) of the product they are hawking on the street (or out of their suburban garage). The 'cut' on this batch of coke could easily have happened before the drug even made it into this country - and traded hands 5 times before reaching the level of the person selling to college kids. The 'dealer' sells what is provided to him/her - and, no, they don't have handy little 'test kits.'

(1,969 posts)It's just a one off sale. So from the dealers point of view why not.

(50,555 posts)Forget Florida. Just forget it.
California has just as good of weather, better beaches, fewer puritanical pricks who want you all in jail, and absolutely reliable weed. You dont have to go to some guy on a street corner who might be a cop to try to buy drugs that could have anything in them. You can go to a store and know exactly what youre getting
and if you meet a cop after you buy weed he isnt going to cuff you.

(24,366 posts)LOL....really?
I've been to several beaches in California. They all have one thing in common; The fucking cold-ass Pacific Ocean!
Also never saw sand like this on any beach in California;
The rest of your post is a given!
(I know white sand beaches exist on the west coast, I'm just busting your chops! )

(15,740 posts)Florida's beaches are nicer, and the Gulf beaches are nicer than the Atlantic beaches.

(65,000 posts)...one can go from a gulf beach to an ocean beach in about 5 minutes.
Alas, the beaches in Key West are not great. As much as I dig that town, one has to go to Bahia, or the upper keys to get really good beaches. KW beaches are shallower & muddier, and the sand is very course.
Still love it there.

Two members of Army's football program were involved in a drug-related incident at a Florida vacation home during Spring Break on Thursday. Six people, including an unnamed Army football player, were hospitalized after being found unconscious from overdosing on fentanyl-laced cocaine, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
Two individuals remain in critical condition and on ventilators as of Friday, while three are in stable condition and one has been released. It is unclear at this time the status of the football player, but two of the six individuals who overdosed are confirmed to be students at the U.S. Military Academy. Another Army football player was at the house during the incident but is unharmed, according the Associated Press.
"The U.S. Military Academy is aware of the situation involving West Point cadets, which occurred Thursday night in Wilton Manors, FL," Army said a statement to the Sun-Sentinel. "The incident is currently under investigation and no other details are available at this time."
Two individuals suffered cardiac arrest shortly after using the drug, according to the report. Two others received enough fentanyl to cause an overdose while performing mouth-to-mouth in an attempt to revive the other students.
