(11,095 posts)as seeing a way to play all of this (adroitly as usual) to their advantage. They will skillfully play the fence in this (hugely unpopular) conflict - allowing one of their chief rivals to publicly immolate themselves and eventually self-destruct - while keeping their hands relatively clean, and perhaps even playing a benevolent statesman 'aid and comfort' card with the region and refugees - clearing the way for them to emerge on the other end with more standing and greater power and influence (particularly in their own sphere, but also globally) than ever before.
Taiwan? Not unless they're stupid enough to start bombing runs tomorrow.

(45,640 posts)They are re-thinking their strategy, not giving up their goals. They will obtain superpower status but it is not going to be as easy as they thought.
As you say the intimidating strong arm approach is going to have to be softened. The more covert style of invasion like with the US may have to be the way to go.
They have been doing the benevolent game on Latin America and Africa for quite some time, spending huge amounts of money on infrastructure while buying up resources. And stationing Chinese military there as well.
Yes they are going first for regional dominance, then global. That is why Taiwan was crucial. But it is most certainly on the back burner temporarily, I would assume.

It is highly significant that China and India echo in the UNSC the baseless accusations of Russia on the use of chemical and biological weapons in Ukraine after having failed to condemn the Russian agression. Any semblance of commonly agreed rules in foreign policy is swept away.
