Iowa's longstanding status as the first contest in Democrats' presidential nomination process appears in serious jeopardy, with party leadership set to review a plan to reshape the primary calendar while weighing factors including states ethnic diversity in deciding which will hold their contests first, according to a proposal reviewed by the Des Moines Register.
The newspaper reported Friday the Democratic National Committee is considering a plan that would require states to go through an application process if they want to hold a primary or caucus before March.
The four states that have traditionally led the Democratic calendarIowa, followed by New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolinawould reportedly not be given any preferential treatment over other states that want to hold early contests.
Up to five states would be allowed to hold contests before March under the proposal, but the party would take a state's "ethnic, geographic (and) union representation" into account and prioritize states that have "fair, transparent and inclusive" primaries, according to the Des Moines Register.
