A lot of those Russian soldiers are probably very young, inexperienced guys who had no idea what they were getting into. Putin doesn't care, they're just cannon fodder to him.

While not perfect, their reaction was not bad. At least two tanks were returning fire

Make the enemy keep their heads down and stop shooting at you is the correct immediate action.

If the video was longer it should show a platoon sized force of Infantry (at minimum) head into the woods and clear the ambush site.

I don't have access to a large enough screen to see if the ambush team bolted. I could see some tracers which should be from their cover team. It was ballsy to launch a close range ambush in broad daylight.

Back in the days of the Soviets, that is what exactly would have been off to the right where they were running. A kill zone.

Scout likely Infantry counter attack paths and set up claymores if available, grenades on tripwire if not. Cover that area with machine guns if you have enough people, if not it will at least slow them down

Still wasn't a bad ambush. It delayed the columns progress which is the point of such harassment.
