(4,436 posts)It appears to be a shotgun, id say, based on the diameter of the barrel.
Very powerful photo.
The Ukraini people know how to use social media.

(14,574 posts)by Putin's disgusting invasion. I hope she lives.
Too many kids have carried guns, and she should be worrying about homework, not getting killed.

(15,803 posts)republicans won't see what we see, and the NRA would turn this into a sales pitch.

(1,525 posts). . . pump shotgun, 12 gauge with modified chamber to hold 7-8 rounds. Looks as though she has an ammo holder on the stock so she doesn't have to fish shells out of her pockets to reload. Her dirty hands and the bullet holes in the side of the building suggest she's been in a fight.

(951 posts)I'm an adult male, and a few hours of shotgun use has always left me with a bruised shoulder. Yes I hold it correctly, they just kick hard. If one were to exercise very poor shooting form, the kick back could be enough to dislocate a shoulder or fracture a collar bone...
Shotguns like the one pictured are made of polymer and are quite light compared to a heavy wooden WWII rifle for example, so more feel of the kick is transferred through the stock and into your shoulder. Large caliber rifles kick hard as well, but it seems the heavy stocks absorb more of the force.
Final piece to the puzzle: ammo type. Bird shot is very small and a much lighter load overall than buckshot. Buckshot kicks very very hard. Slugs I think kick the hardest. The heavier the round fired, the more kick on the users end.
I'm not a gun nut so I'm not sure why I decided to answer in such detail. I'm stressed for them and I feel so sorry for this little girl that the "science" part of the answer appealed to me and momentarily distracted me from the reality of the situation.

(51,591 posts)that she saw two or three little kids walk down a street in Ukraine while their city was being bombed. Malcolm told her. "In 2 months you're going to see those same little kids lying down IED (whatever it's called) wire in their town". He was spot on.

(36,299 posts)Even a grown man can short stroke a pump shotgun . Working that slide with authority in combat conditions may be too much to expect from the girl and there's also the recoil and noise to consider.
Trying to visualize the girl standing up, holding that full size shotgun and being able rack the slide back like she means it and moving the slide all the way fwd after firing the first shot in a very stressful situation. I don't see that working out well.

(22,345 posts)The photo was taken by Alexei Kirichenko in Kiev, and is of his nine-year old daughter. He posted it to his Facebook account on Friday, with the simple message: Young girl with candy.
In the comments he is asked if it is his daughter, and he replies that it is. He is asked if the photo was staged to to highlight the horrors of Putin invading a nation and putting civilians, including children, in danger. He explains that the photo is staged, and that he gave his daughter the gun, unloaded, for the photo.
