Why some American leftists are critical of U.S. assistance to Ukraine

The phenomenon of Republicans who admire Russian President Vladimir Putin is well known — especially since its most voluble proponent is former President Donald Trump.

But on the left, there also exists a smaller movement that holds the United States and its NATO allies as at least somewhat responsible for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Putin, an authoritarian nationalist who has enacted laws targeting LGBTQ people and jailed liberal dissidents, has never been lionized on the left. Still, a cadre of far-left activists and pundits argue that the U.S. risked provoking confrontation with Russia by expanding NATO to its borders, and some are opposed to giving military aid to Ukraine or imposing economic sanctions on Russia.

“Everyone I know is united in condemning this war, and none of us like Putin,” Branko Marcetic, a staff writer at the Marxist journal Jacobin, told Yahoo News. But, he said, that doesn’t mean the U.S. should arm Ukraine...

1. The logic is so flawed.

NATO is responsible for forcing Russia to kill and steal land from their neighbors?

NATO is the only reason that today's bombings are not taking place in Warsaw, Berlin or Paris... Putin's actions are absolute proof that the European Nations and their allies need to protect themselves from Russia, the NATO alliance is the only real obstacle in his path. What the hell is wrong with people?

3. Far too many "leftists"

have been raised on a steady diet of Jimmy Dore, Greenwald, RT and Samera Khan,etc,etc. The Putin/GOP propaganda ops on social media have yielded some returns from over the years. Hence from folks whom should know better, (DSA) taking a pro-Putin stance. As the rural areas were targeted by Rush pigboy radio, so has the left been targeted by media engineering as well. Some are just bad actors from the start like Greenwald, some were just led astray like Jacobin publishing.

4. Disturbing, though not unexpected from the likes of Tulsi and Greenwald. Total claptrap with

an unspoken, yet pretty clear motive-- that is indefensible and far from benign.

school of thought. And some of them are Russian sympathizers and propagandists. Either way, their positions are not worth serious consideration.
