SALT LAKE CITY (AP) U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas said he's concerned efforts to politicize the court or add additional justices may erode the institution's credibility, speaking Friday in Utah at an event hosted by former Republican U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatchs foundation.
Thomas, the most senior justice on the nine-member court, said he often worries about the long-term repercussions of trends such as cancel culture and a lack of civil debate.
You can cavalierly talk about packing or stacking the court. You can cavalierly talk about doing this or doing that. At some point the institution is going to be compromised, he told an audience of about 500 people at an upscale hotel in Salt Lake City.
By doing this, you continue to chip away at the respect of the institutions that the next generation is going to need if theyre going to have civil society, Thomas said.

(82,849 posts)The clear evidence of the politicization of the Court has been the hallmark of your entire tenure there, bolstered and buttressed by the presence of Justice Boof and Justice Handmaid. Your failure to recuse yourself from cases in which your wife has an interest is another example of that politicization. If you had a scrap of integrity, you'd step down yesterday.
Spare me your cynical, hypocritical tears, Mr. Thomas. The nation and its citizens are measurably worse off because of you.

(14,270 posts)It as disqualifying as whining about "Critical Race Theory". Both are co-opted or terms manufactured by the right to whip up ignorant outrage among their base. Thomas once again outed himself as a partisan hack who does not deserve the office he holds.

By speaking out on this, he is actively politicizing the court. It points to both his ignorance of Court history (the court has already been expanded several times), there is no reason to believe expanding it again will result in a loss public respect. At least no more so than the blatant steamrolling and gaslighting the court now experiences with it's uber-conservative majority.
But really, this is probably nothing more than an attempt to misdirect attention from his conflicts of interest arising from his wife's political activity.
