Fascist cult symbol. I think many of them know what they are fighting for just like the racist Trumpers pushing for authoritarianism...

(13,582 posts)Its not a traditional Russian symbol. It is about allegiance to Putin not Russia, just like a Swastika is about allegiance to Hitler not Germany.

(5,541 posts)They're using Z, Z in a square, V, and a few others to identify different units / fronts in their offensive.
It's pretty normal for big military offensives, look at pictures from the US invasion of Iraq and you'll see us using chevrons (upsidedown V)
What is disturbing are the pictures that keep surfacing of Russian troops with Soviet flags or other symbols

(13,582 posts)The Z is not the same as symbols on invasion vehicles. It now permeates Russian society. Its on clothes, billboards, civilian vehicles, social media, its everywhere. It is a sign of Russians allegiance to Putin over the Russian state.

(5,541 posts)I saw the gymnast thing but hadn't caught how it has blown up in the past few days. That is disturbing

(58,442 posts)I think it is just an identifier. I've seen some Russian equipment with a "V" on them. I think Z is for the Northern Force and V for the southern. The Russians probably though the two groups would meet up in a few days and they would need identifiers so they don't engage each other.

(32,061 posts)It does kind of have the swastika-like feeling about it, yes. But, I suspect it will probably turn out to be something innocuous.
