Two Ukrainians whose family hid someone during the Holocaust say they've found refuge in Israel because the survivor's granddaughter took them inTwo Ukrainian women who've fled their country amid turmoil brought on by the Russian invasion have found refuge in Israel.
Their grandmother Maria Blishchik hid a Jewish girl named Fanya Bass in Ukraine during World War II from Nazis, saving her life and ensuring that her family lineage would not end, The Jewish Press reported.
Today, Fanya's granddaughter Sharon Bass welcomed Lasia Orshoko and Alona Chugai, Blishchik's granddaughters. She took them in when they arrived on Sunday at the Ben Guion International Airport, according to the Jewish Press.
Sharon said she visited the gravesite where her grandmother's body lies to pray that she would be able to take in the two Ukrainian refugees, the Jewish Press reported.

Cousins and Ukrainian refugees Lesia Orshoko and Alona Chugai are among the millions who are running for their lives as Russian forces invade their country. But in a wartime twist of fate, the cousins landed in Israel last week to a friendly face someone who was repaying a decades-old kindness.
The friendly face was Sharon Bass, whose Jewish grandmother was sheltered and saved by Lesias grandmother in Ukraine during the Holocaust.
Sharon said it was her honor to take in the cousins and return the immeasurable kindness from nearly 80 years ago.
It felt like history repeating itself, she said. But in this case, its an inversion of the norm. Jews have been persecuted throughout our entire history. Weve been killed, kicked out or forced to flee from every country weve stayed in long enough. But this time we have the privilege and responsibility of being a safe haven for other fleeing refugees.

Hats off to these kind honorable folks. Too bad the government of Israel isn't doing their part. From the Times of Israel.
"Ukraine has been publicly pleading for Israel to provide it with protective gear, but has so far been rebuffed. Earlier Friday, the Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel Yevgen Korniychuk said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky does not understand Israels refusal to provide defensive equipment, as he accused Israeli leaders of not doing enough to help Ukraine by providing defensive aid, absorbing refugees, and taking a clear stance against Russia."
