Former U.S. Army prosecutor Glenn Kirschner believes that failing to hold former President Donald Trump "accountable for his crimes" will "destroy" the legitimacy of U.S. institutions.
Trump is facing multiple high-profile investigations, and some legal experts have urged the Justice Department to indict the former president or appoint a special counsel to investigate him. Kirschner has previously contended that Trump will face accountability for his actions related to January 6, 2021when hundreds of his supporters violently attacked the U.S. Capitol.
In addition to the Capitol assaultwhich came after Trump urged his supporters to march to the federal legislative building and "fight like hell"the former president and his allies are being investigated for their efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Trump pressured then Vice President Mike Pence to reject the Electoral College votes of several key swing states so they could be replaced by alternate slates of electors that supported him, despite the will of voters.
"DECLINING to hold Trump accountable for his crimes in light the overwhelming evidence would be a political calculation. It would also would make a mockery of honest, law-abiding politicians & destroy the legitimacy of the institutions of American government. This is an easy call," Kirschner, who now works as a legal analyst for MSNBC and NBC News, wrote in a Saturday tweet.

(15,544 posts)Because thats when the SCOTUS ruled against Trumps privilege claims, which resulted in the release of thousands of documents, including the memos regarding seizing the voting machines. Its also just been a few weeks since Pences staff, some of whom were in the room when the coup was plotted, testified to the committee.
So it hasnt really been that long since most of the significant physical evidence and testimony has emerged.

(820 posts)No Republican president has ever been held to account for their crimes or deceits and none ever will.
Nixon was never charged for his crimes but is the only president that had to leave office. Reagan/Bush who had their Iran/Contra affair pardoned everyone and were never held to account for what they did.
W. Bush brought this country to war in Iraq with lies and tortured people and was never held to account.
Every lie and every time they were allowed to get away with what they did, it tarnished the integrity of our justice system.
And the results of this? Today when the president tells the world the truth that Putin is maneuvering his army for attack against Ukraine, a big portion of the world doesn't believe us. Why should they?
It turns the stomach.

(6,572 posts)...there would be no justice in America until they were charged & prosecuted. I said it set a dangerous precedent.
I don't want to see that precedent become the routine.

(35,925 posts)It's the ENFORCEMENT of charges through weak, politically biased courts that allow money to stall justice, and that allow justices to hold their nominators in power.
What he really means is handcuffed under criminal charges and held until trial.
Here's the timeline of upcoming court cases in which Trump has been charged.

Read Elie Mystal's Allow Me to Retort to get a flavor of how unserious enforcement of the law is unless another branch calls the charges a matter of national security.

This site looks like a great reference for keeping track of this stuff. Of which there is a lot more than I reaIized--the sheer volume is kind of mind boggling!

(9,081 posts)Instead of allowing the media to get away with focusing on "law and order" or "DON'T DEFUND THE POLICE", focus on white collar crime. At this time the IRS is only going after the poor because it's easy pickins'. I recall Bush elimating IRS employees as a way to skirt paying taxes for the wealthy. It's got even worse.
Run on this!
The agencys workforce has been sharply reduced, and audit rates, especially for large corporations and high-income taxpayers, have plummeted. As a result, the tax gap the difference between taxes owed and taxes paid is large and growing.
