Spokesman for Jerusalem mayor @MosheLion hung up when I asked him to explain why Russia's flag is being displayed on the Old City walls.

UNITED NATIONS -- The United States says it was one of three countries to vote against a U.N. resolution condemning the glorification of Nazism over freedom of speech issues and concerns that Russia was using it to carry out political attacks against its neighbors.
The resolution entitled "Combating glorification of Nazism, Neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to fueling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance," was approved by the U.N.'s human rights committee on Friday with 131 in favor, 3 against with 48 abstentions.
Ukraine and Palau were the other no votes.

(33,327 posts)This isn't it. Someone has to be able to maintain a neutrality that Putin accepts (although I don't think he plans to stop short of conquering Ukraine).
I can't imagine Israel is taking this stance without the Biden Administration's understanding of it.

(102,237 posts)for a lot of (possibly) "inaccurate" (propaganda) being disseminated in ISRAELI MSM.
Granted the US is facing similar issues with our RW media, but it does make it very hard to gauge their (Israel's) official governmental positions right now.
I take the current reporting with a grain of salt, but I don't think they get a free pass either.

For way too long the West sat by and let Israel enforce apartheid on the Palestinian people.
Many attacked President Carter for calling out that fact.
Israel has been watching the rising Nazi movement in the US and the increasing anti-Semitism across both Western Europe and the US.

(102,237 posts)and after years under Netanyahu and his Likudists, I'm surprised at those who would assume Israeli policies to be automatically favorable and complementary to our own--particularly after our own slip into hard RW (Trumpist) policies in recent years.

(268,969 posts)There is distrust of and from all sides - sadly very few from any side are promoting democracy and that includes every coup supporter and defender of billionaire rule/rule by oligarchs in the US and everywhere else.
This is not my way or the highway time.

(5,857 posts)has a large population of Russian citizens / former citizens -- large enough to swing an election if issues become big enough. They also have a large, different, population who view UKR with severe skepticism due to pogroms and the Holodomor. In many ways many Jews believe if it weren't for Germany, Ukraine would lead the list of anti-semitic countries of the 19th and 20th centuries.
