(1,402 posts)I can't believe the world would let this happen either, except we are all afraid of a nuclear war. That would destroy all the population on the planet. With a madman like Putin and his followers in power there would be another World War...................It is so sad. My heart breaks for the Ukrainians. Aren't there any decent people in Russia? They have a madman in power and surely they could stop him if they wanted to, if nothing else, they could string Putin UP!!! That is what should happen!!

(14,863 posts)And I say this as a 2nd Gen half Ukrainian American. 😢
It's been reported that over 4,000 Russians have been jailed for protesting.
Some jails are so full they can only stand up!

(90,335 posts)... about nukes cause he's getting his ass kicked to this hour.
Reports from OSINT is there has been no "REAL" advancements worth anything in the north were there's still contested towns in the south that are close to the Russian border.

Eastern Europe second.
...
USA is pretty far down the list, and yet we are likely the ones dragging things down by attempting to unify Europe's direction.
I feel that public opinion in Europe for support of a no-fly zone is increasing and this will likely affect their leadership.
The US should follow Europe's lead.

My concern about nukes is not just for the US, but for the world. Radioactive fallout carries far and wide.

(14,863 posts)I lived, and live in the #2 or so target of the old USSR - NYC. Maps w rings of death, destruction, types of injuries, radiation levels if The Empire State Bldg was Ground Zero.
You could understand why I'm more easily angered...
No, I'm only getting an (thank goodness) occasional short WWIII fear spikes despite
my experiences of 5+ years since I was 6 yrs old of monthly howling air raid drills.
Yup, there's that.

(12,792 posts)I lived between two military bases on the West Coast and military craft were constantly flying over, it felt like living in a war zone at one point.
I think the greatest fear, currently, is that Putin would use a so-called 'limited' tactical nuke, probably within Ukraine itself. I have heard no one mention that this would be a "red line," either.

(1,000 posts)This is gut wrenching and heartbreaking, but NO ONE wins a nuclear war.
In 1917 the Russians thought they were being liberated from an inept authoritarian. They have not known anything but kleptocratic authoritarian tyrants since. The best outcome is for Ukraine to win, and Russians to get that liberation they thought they were getting in 1917.
Something like 63% of Russian's, mostly the elderly who watch state run TV, like our Fox News, NewsMax, and right-wing radio, are all behind what's going on in Ukraine. Trump followers and Fox News here are all behind it too. They want those Nazi's led by a Jew, those biological weapons developing SOBs who are mostly uneducated farmers, those aggressors who gave up all of their nuclear weapons years ago, and are having their civilian populations murdered by war crimes, yeah, those Ukrainian SOBs.
No it cannot be that the guy who actually does poison, disappear or have his opponents have 4th story falls from buildings. No, that guy, Putin, isn't the problem. It's the comedian turned man of the year who will defend and I mean defend, not offensively aggressively take the war to the enemy, I mean the guy who would lay down his life for his country and his fledgling democracy, he's the one MOST Russians think needs to be stomped out.
And every day we wonder if it'll be our last and we place our hopes that the odds-on best bet is like before, let the Russians do what is necessary to straighten out what went wrong again. It's a fine line. 3.5 billion years of evolution to get us to where we are today and snuffed out by a madman and his loyalists in a murder suicide pack. Or put your eggs into the basket that no matter how bad it gets, it's not as bad as complete loss of life, a man-made global extinction event that takes most other life forms down with us.
One thing that's almost certain however with option B. We'll end up with the loss of that man of the year and his grateful people.

(21,299 posts)I turned on Fox News for 2 minutes tonight, they are all gung ho attack Russia, send in the MiGs, close the air space, President Biden is afraid of Putin, President Biden needs to do more.
There was a Democratic Comgresswoman on CNN parroting Fox News talking points, that we need to do more.
Fucking Republicans worked to abolish NATO, took help from Putin to get elected, took money laundered by the NRA and now all of a sudden it is Republicans who have Ukraine's back. Look how many Republicans voted against military aid to Ukraine just 2 days ago and now they are saying President Biden isn't doing enough after they voted against military aid. This aid, a half billion dollars is being sent to Ukraine in a matter of days, not weeks.
I just can't take this shit anymore.
I am for giving Ukraine tons of Javelins, tons of anti-aircraft missiles, tons of drones. I am all for giving Ukraine daily intelligence on Russian troops and planes.
What the fuck, president Biden united our allies and united NATO against Russia while Republicans are a wing of the Putin Party but with all of that said, all of a sudden it is the Republican party that is anti-Putin, that is for doing more to help Ukraine. Fuck it, I give up.
President Biden said that the US will defend every inch of NATO countries.
I'm done.

(21,299 posts)that president Biden didn't do enough to help Ukraine and it will be one of their major campaign talking points for the 2022 election.
The United States is one country of NATO. NATO is trying to help Ukraine, NATO needs to agree on military steps to counter Russia.
President Biden along with NATO, even Colonel Alexander Vindman have all agreed that enforcing a no fly zone is off the table. Fox News is now pushing a no fly zone and they claim that president Biden won't do it because he is afraid of Putin.
What am I supposed to think about people here who push for a no fly zone?
I don't want to know strategy, we shouldn't know it. I agree with people like Malcolm Nance who pushed for tons of Javelins and Stingers and drones and those weapons are being sent to Ukraine.
President Biden has warned Putin about invading 1 inch of NATO countries, has warned Putin about using chemical weapons.
I am proud of what our president has done, we are sending Ukraine military weapons that amount to the entire year's Ukrainian defense budget.

(42,770 posts)an emotional side - people getting slaughtered. And no piece of paper or military strategy or caution matters when you hear some Ukrainians saying the world is letting Putin invade and kill them.

How many deaths occurred in the civil war?
Image result for Deaths in Civil War
618,222
But how many died has long been a matter of debate. For more than a century, the most-accepted estimate was about 620,000 dead. A specific figure of 618,222 is often cited, with 360,222 Union deaths and 258,000 Confederate deaths.Jan 6, 2022
It is truly horrific to describe this war..with few if any doctors in the early 1860s...& what could they use to save lives in 1860?
Think about that one for a while...
