I've been leaving in-the-shell peanuts on the ground around my birdbath for crows and squirrels. I think I got my first "gift" from the crows. A little rubber duckie was in the birdbath!
Unless they left it there for themselves to play with, I'm not sure. Anyway...cute!

(24,288 posts)I've given squirrels and crows over 5400 lbs of peanuts in my lifetime. Never got a damn thing, but the enjoyment of watching them grabbing another peanut.

(35,619 posts)I would get an orange from what I think was a crow. This would always happen in the spring, when I started work in my gardens.
Sometimes these oranges were kind of scroungy, but nevertheless, an orange it was.
Always amazed me.

(9,104 posts)The jays at my house are greedy little beggars.
They'll hop on the feeder, grab one of the peanuts and "weigh" it, discarding a light one and flying off with the heaviest they can find.

(146,255 posts)We used to feed them on our patio table while we were sitting there. They'd fly down, weigh several peanuts and fly away with the heaviest one, just a foot or so from us. A few would fly to my hand to take a nut, as well.
Crows don't get that tame, generally, but jays will become accustomed to humans in just a day or two.
