Fox is trying to kill its viewers and these efforts are working

Newly-published data from an Axios/Ipsos poll shows that a significant driver of opinion is peoples news source, with Fox News and conservative outlet readers differing substantially from MSNBC and CNN viewers.
Its no secret that views about the coronavirus pandemic and related matters have been influenced by partisanship almost since the very beginning.
And its not all that surprising that such divisions would become evident in tracking those views by news diet. But some of the differences that showed up in the Axios/Ipsos survey were chillingly stark.
For example, 84 percent of respondents whose main sources of news are CNN and/or MSNBC said theyd been vaccinated, 27 point higher than respondents who use sources of news other than cable news, and 16 points higher than those with a Fox News/conservative media diet. The CNN/MSNBC group was 26 points more likely to be boosted (at 66%) than the Fox News/conservative group at 40 percent

(144,884 posts)This study showed that PBS viewers were the most well informed. I love the fact that people who watched Fox were less informed than people who watched no news https://www.businessinsider.com/study-watching-fox-news-makes-you-less-informed-than-watching-no-news-at-all-2012-5
With all else being equal, people who watched no news were expected to answer 1.28 correctly; those watching only Sunday morning shows figured at 1.52; those watching only "The Daily Show" figured at 1.60; and those just listening to NPR were expected to correctly answer 1.97 international questions.
Those watching only MSNBC were expected to correctly answer only 1.23 out of 4, while viewers of only Fox News figured at 1.08. The study noted that the effects of Fox News, MSNBC and talk radio depended on the ideology of the consum.....
Thus, those who watched no newsanswering questions by guessing or relying on existing knowledgefared much better than those who watched the most popular 24-hour cable news network (i.e. Fox News).

(1,969 posts)Though I would be interested in seeing the difference between the small minority of Americans who watch cable news (or cable for that matter) compared to the general population.
I would expect they would be much older and more likel;y to have comorbidities such as obesity and high blood pressure.

(25,811 posts)I don't own a regular TV. I have never watched Fox news, although I do watch Rachel Maddow several times a week on a streaming service.
I have been without a regular TV since I moved here to Santa Fe in 2008. The reasons were several. One was that I couldn't afford to purchase a conventional television. Second was that I could not afford to pay for a cable service, which I'd have preferred over regular broadcast TV. The third, and somewhat oddly the most important reason, was that the apartment I'd rented had its cable hookup directly under the large window in the living room. The place you'd need to put the TV. And then you'd need to close the blinds so that you wouldn't be staring directly into the strong daylight -- one of the wonders of living here -- and be able to watch the TV. So I passed on getting a television. I honestly thought it would be temporary, and that after a while I'd do the conventional thing of having a TV and cable service, but as time went by, I was more and more happy with my no television life. Especially because so many things are streamed on line. I also have Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Netflix, and honestly, they provide more programming that I can possibly watch. I'm sometimes a bit regretful that something I'd like to watch is on some other pay to view service, but I quickly get over that. Again, I honestly have more programming available to me than I can realistically watch.
Many, many years ago, in the early 1970s to be specific, another time when I didn't have a TV, a coworker became genuinely concerned that I was unaware of what was going on in the world. Well, I did read the local newspaper (The Washington Post) and even more to the point, I read books. Lots of books. Fiction and non-fiction. Every time this friend quizzed me on what was going on, he was astonished that I knew exactly what was going on, and even more.
People really ought not to be surprised at how much you can learn of what's going on in the world without watching regular TV. I will argue that watching TV, no matter what channel, will dumb you down. Watch an hour or two every day. Read books and magazines, gain a large understanding of what is going on, and you'll be not only better off but vastly better informed.

(3,433 posts)The right has a bias against COVID testing, which would lead to under reporting. And I imagine there's a bias against admitting you have COVID in a poll.

(4,387 posts)These idiots, at an anti-vaccination rally in Wellington decided that their sore throats, fatigue, headaches, and lost sense of smell must be gamma rays from the government and not, you know, Covid from camping on a lawn for weeks with other unvaccinated idiots. What's the solution:

If it's self-reported you have to factor in non-reporting by crazy people.
