I'm confused and kind of alarmed

about something I see on all the excellent coverage of Ukraine on CNN. I've read here and on the twitter feed of the doctor I trust the most on Covid (Dr. Jonathan Reiner), that cases are on the rise in Europe. So why do I see almost no one wearing a mask in Ukraine or even in Poland? I see crowded shelters and trains with almost no one masked. Today when President Zelensky went to a hospital he was unmasked.

Is it because there is a shortage of masks? I know they are being attacked and have so many other issues of survival to worry about, but don't the volunteers have masks to pass out, at least in Poland?

The relative cost of masks vs their per capita income is much higher, so they may now be in short supply.

They’ve been doing videos about prices, supply, etc. since the sanctions. They live near the Black Sea in the Konban region. The father said tonight that as of March 10, Russia had dropped the mask mandate and vaccine passport requirements so everybody in his video seemed to be maskless. While the prices seem to be going up, the stores he’s done walkthroughs of seem to be well stocked, at least in his area.

(although to be brutally honest, he seems to have been co-opted by the religious right)--but I really admire him and his tremendous skills, and can forgive much in terms of him not being completely well informed. It breaks my heart thinking about what he and his family are about to have to face.

As the days went by, you hardly see any. People are running for their lives and are apparently too concerned with other things to wear masks.
