(24,881 posts)They were Polish Russian and English. Followed by German. In southern Poland you had more Czeck speakers. When I say speakers I mean able to communicate on basic level but not writing.
I didnt know many that spoke Italian and I was hanging out with translators at work for an international company. French yes but only one Italian.
Out of these kids I'd be stunned at more than 10% understanding Italian.
All that said most people outside the United States adapt a hell of a lot faster than we do. It will take them a semester or two though.
I didn't read the article but there are probably plenty of immigrants in Italy from Ukraine that could probably assist schools.

(35,648 posts)I took my information from my spouse, who owned a chain of language schools in Italy, but that was decades ago. Also he didn't specify which languages, but I'll ask him next time I talk to him. He is current on the situation and was just there on business for a few months.

(51,550 posts)I started 1st grade as an immigrant at a school where I didn't know the language. So I am having flashbacks, especially watching how those two kids look tentative steps into the school. But getting greeted like that (I wasn't) will surely help their mental state.
