Squatters have occupied a mansion belonging to the Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska in central London in the early hours of Monday.
The five squatters in the building in Belgrave Square two from eastern Europe, though not from Ukraine say they feel their countries are also under threat from Vladimir Putin. Their plan is to open up the mansion, which they say has too many rooms to count including a cinema and a wine cellar, to Ukrainians fleeing the war, along with other refugees needing shelter.
In a message to Russian oligarchs, the squatters said: You occupy Ukraine, we occupy you.
A significant police presence barred entry to the cream-coloured stone building with a black front door and pillars at the entrance.

(3,340 posts)If you sink the yachts no one benefits, a $500 million yacht can be sold quickly for 1/2 the price, $250 million will help Ukraine big time.
Same with the wine in that mansion, I bet some of those bottles cost up to $100,000.00 or more. Sell them all at 1/2 price, send the money to Ukraine.

(32,340 posts)There are lots of empty condos in Manhattan - luxury condos that were bought illegally by Russian oligarchs. Chump taught them how to disguise their stolen wealth by forming secret holding companies with names like "ABC Holdings LTD." Or whatever ... just don't identify yourself as Russian and nobody will notice. These fake companies were used to purchase multi-million-dollar condos as investments and they're vacant most of the time. Real estate in New York City is so precious that no condo should be left unoccupied. If the oligarchs' wealth is truly being frozen, then these condos can never be sold or transferred again. How will this new reality be addressed in NYC and elsewhere in the US?

I note how these activists aren't just complaining that their government "isn't doing anything" & waiting for an attorney general to impose consequences, they're taking action themselves. There are many ways private citizens can take action to impose consequences, IMHO we need to remember that.
