Russian President Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine has been been an unexpected and historic challenge for Russia: the Russian military is suffering global embarrassment over its inability to tamp down fierce Ukrainian resistance; the Russian economy has been decimated; and the last shreds of Putin's international reputation are in tatters.
But experts say Putin's military failures and his status as a global pariah could make him more likely to double down on another of his goals: manipulating foreign elections and sowing distrust in democratic systems.
"Because of the resistance Russia has gotten and NATO becoming even stronger, Russia has to show a sign of dominance on the cyber side, just from a playbook perspective," David Kennedy, a former NSA hacker and the CEO of TrustedSec, told Insider. "So Putin and the intelligence agencies are going to look at how to cause as much damage as possible."
He added that the voting and election process in the US "is a ripe target" because of its vulnerability and the success Russia saw with its 2016 election interference efforts.

(2,336 posts)He's going to have zero influence on any upcoming elections because, similar to the orange bloated one, he's been de-platformed. His Russian bots can no longer freely roam, and that's a really good thing.

It didn't cost him much to do it the first time and the GOP is only to willing to work with him.
The GOP and Putin have the same goals.
Autocratic takeover, permanent power and vast wealth.

(6,510 posts)They've been mostly cut off, and people everywhere are seeing fewer trolls and retweets of Russian propaganda. They have no "dominance", they were assisted by Westerners like Murdoch. If they could have launched any sort of cyber ops against us, we'd already be seeing them. To the contrary, it's clear that we have had advanced infomation on nearly every move they've made, and have planted in a massive amount of paranoia into the Kremlin as a result. Hell, do we even know if the "KGB leaks" are real, or are they part of the plan to destabilize Putin and the Russian government.
Does this mean our election issues are solved? Of course not, we have our own fascist cancer right here in the US, that Putin was explointing. That needs to be excised, but Putin will only hav a minimal impact on them either way, going forward.

(109 posts)Republicans are interesting in one thing only. That's money. Power, yes, but only as that pertains to bringing them money.
Putin is going to be very short on money. I don't think it's cheap to buy Republicans. They can make very nice livings without any help. If they are going to take bribes, they will want big ones.
Any political, legal, moral or philosophical position that a Republican appears to promote is merely a smokescreen, for their theft operations. Their so called "position" on an issue changes overnight if they need to reposition their smokescreen. This applies to abortion, states rights, racism, everything.
There only real goal in any situation is to make or steal money. Putin has so much less money to pass around these days.

(30,613 posts)He's facing an extremely angry USA BECAUSE he fucked with us. That was a very bad mistake. We've taken away the money he would have spent on attacking us; now he needs it just to keep his army supplied. He'll be under harsh sanctions forever (or until he's deposed). If we're smart, he'll never be able to fuck with us again.
