A Tennessee state agency told Pamela Moses that she was eligible to vote, in writing no less. But the Shelby County District Attorney then prosecuted Moses for following that guidance and registering to vote, and in January a Memphis judge sentenced her to six years in prison.
Two weeks ago, Moses was granted a new trial after The Guardian revealed errors by state officials in her case, though the charges still hang over her head. Moses was released on bond on Feb. 25.
Moses spoke with Bolts about her ordeal and what led to itTennessees harsh disenfranchisement rules, a punitive and discriminatory local court system, and the suppression of Black voters. Moses, a Black Lives Matter activist in Memphis who was barred from voting after a 2015 guilty plea, has denounced these practices long before her recent prosecution.
More than one in five Black adults are barred from voting in Tennessee due to criminal convictions, compared to seven percent of the rest of the states population, a number that reflects vast racial disparities in who is prosecuted and how severely. Last week a local group of advocates demanded a racial equity audit of Shelby County DA Amy Weirichs office, pointing to past scrutiny into its practices; Weirich responded by calling their demand divisive and inflammatory. In addition, people seeking to regain voting rights are faced with Tennessees notoriously confusing and burdensome process of even determining eligibility, let alone actually restoring their rights.

(19,192 posts)until you understand the systemic racism involved in the State of Tennessee.
I sincerely hope this backfires, and I hope some equitable voting laws will be written and enacted in Tennessee.

(714 posts)You can call the IRS hotline today, follow their advice on how to fill out your income tax forms, then get in serious trouble with the IRS because you followed the IRS guidance in how to fill out your tax forms if they told you the wrong thing.
I wish I could say how she was treated was unbelievable....

(19,192 posts)I did exactly as you mentioned in 2006. I called the IRS hotline, used the information they gave me to prepare my taxes, and three years later I got a letter from them saying I owed them over $23,000 in penalties and interest for improperly preparing my taxes three years earlier.
The thing is, they knew exactly where I was all that time, and could have contacted me at any time, but they waited for three years, accruing interest and penalties compounded daily before contacting me. I ended up paying slightly over $12,000 because of their incredibly wrong tax "advice".
The IRS sucks.

(15,319 posts)Look, it's pretty fucking simple.
Nothing will change. The racism, fascism, hatred, misogyny and white supremacy...NONE OF IT...will change, unless and until we make racism, fascism, hatred, misogyny and white supremacy unprofitable to the corporations, businesses and individuals that fund it
If you have travel plans to Tennessee, cancel them. Make sure the states Chamber of Commerce and the places you planned to spend your money know why.
Find out what corporations you do business with that are based in TN and stop doing business with them. Let them know why.
Dollyworld and the Grand Ole Oprey are cool. Beale St is cool. I hear Graceland is a Mecca to Elvis fans, but every dollar you spend in TN lines the pockets of the fascists that holds supermajority control over the state's policies and priorities.
They don't give a shit about morals, values, ethics, decency, fairness or democracy, but they do care a shit ton about money and power. As long as they have the power and the money, they could care less.
