If pretending to believe Putin when he lies that regime change in the Ukraine is not what he wants gives him an out which will mean merely terrible things for the region rather than disastrous things for the region. As the article in this thread (https://www.democraticunderground.com/100216482175) pointed out - 'Less than three weeks into the war, there is (almost) no scenario in which this ends well. And well, in this regard, means without millions of people having to suffer for years.' The Finnish president doesn't actually believe what Putin is telling him - but if he can convince Putin he DOES believe him, maybe Putin's insanity can be stopped.
Don't get me wrong, he needs to be removed from power and I'm perfectly happy if that removal from power is due to his violent death. But preventing the use of a nuclear weapon between now and when Putin can be neutralized should be a high priority.
