Russia has asked China for pre-packaged meals to feed soldiers, CNN reports

Amid reports that Russia has asked China for military equipment, including missiles, drones, and armored vehicles, is a telling detail: Russia has also asked China for help feeding its troops, CNN reports.

Russia’s request for Chinese military support included a request for nonperishable food, known in the US context as “meals, ready-to-eat,” or MREs, CNN reports.

The request “raises questions about the fundamental readiness of the Russian military,” CNN reports.

The Russian Treasury might be able to swing a happy meal or two. One thing's for sure, their credit is shit.

And there's nothing in this for China but a little temporary leverage and long term reputation damage.

Then it all has to be transported. I suppose Chinese planes can fly in but the ruskies aren't going to have much of a cargo fleet pretty soon as stuff breaks down with no spares.

US MRE’s have about 1,250 calories. I thought it was more. One MRE can last for quite a while. I don’t think I ever ate a whole one.

and apparently, marching orders are that US soldiers eat at least one hot non-MRE meal per day. The rule gets broken regularly, but they consider it to be detrimental to morale.

when we were in the field. Everyone got an MRE per day. If I got a really nasty one like ham loaf I’d just eat the other stuff. Oatmeal cookies would block you up but the jelly would get everything going again. Next mix PB with the oatmeal cookies. We had drink flavoring and I used to eat it dipping my finger in it. After longer times out in the field my hands real multicolored.

Each one had a pack of matches and a small thing of toilet paper. I stored those in my left cargo pocket on the BDU’s. In 1992 or so they can out with a heating element and a tiny little bottle of hot sauce. The Army ran off coffee, complaining, hot sauce and porn.

In the early 90's we had what were called 'tray-packs'; pre-packaged hot meals designed to serve large units. Boil, open with a can-opener, and serve. I don't know if they have these anymore.

The other hot-meal alternative was freshly-prepared food put into insulated containers and run up to the troops in the supply Humvee.

As tankers, we usually had enough room on the tank to store what we called "pogey-bait", snacks and other junk food purchased privately and packed with the gear. "Pogue" is a Vietnam-Era military slang term for a rear-echelon soldier, who usually has access to all kinds of snack foods, and has the pot-belly to prove it.

I remember the little cardboard box MRE back in the early 70s.

And the candy bar which was basically a rock of sugar with chocolate flavor.

Do they still have the industrial strength crackers?

all that was in it was hundreds of pounds of potatoes, onions, and a few broken glass jars of pickles. i suppose the good stuff may have been looted, but i think the glass jars are telling. this is an army that cannot even vacuum seal pickled foods in easy to transport plastic pouches.

I happen to really enjoy watching videos of MRE reviews. There is a youtuber who tries current MREs from as many different nations as he can get his hands on. I have a few takeaways from his hundreds of videos...

Chinese MREs are some of the worst that are deployed to any modern military force. Often times they are rotten and inedible straight out of the package, within the standard shelf life. Hopefully China is giving away the worst of their worst.

Also as a side note: Ukrainian MREs are some of the finest deployed to any modern military force.

Remember the old movies of the British Navy sailing ships.

Ten cans in a case of 12.

Beef was horse.

Weevils were raisins with legs.

There are current stories of today's broken down merchant marine ships of poor countries not feeding their crew much better.
