Russia Bombards Kyiv as European Leaders Head to Ukraine's Capital

KYIV, Ukraine—A delegation of European leaders headed to Kyiv to meet with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky as Russia lobbed more missiles at the embattled capital amid heightened fighting in the city’s outskirts.

One missile destroyed a building associated with an arms maker in central Kyiv in a predawn strike, blowing the windows out of buildings in a one-block radius. Separately, two apartment buildings were hit, setting fire to one of them.

At least two residents died and dozens were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. There were no fatalities at the arms facility, officials said.

Near the outskirts of Kyiv, a Fox News cameraman was killed and a reporter gravely wounded when their vehicle came under fire near Russian positions. A Ukrainian journalist in the vehicle with them was also killed.

I rank it "disinformation".

I think European leaders, I think of Germany, France, England, maybe Italy. Defenders of democracy, long-standing adherents of freedom and liberalism.

They mean Poland, Czechia, Slovenia. Apart from Poland, they're bit players. Even with Poland, they still have little pull in the alliance and are among its weakest members, economically and militarily. What they have in common is that they're among the more western-leaning of the former Warsaw Pact nations dominated by the USSR (de facto Russia). They share Slavicity, a history of resistance to Russian oppression and domination, and some fairly liberal ideals (even Poland).

Not your prototypical, canonical "European leaders."

I suppose it might have been written: "Eastern European leaders..." but "bit players" or not, it's a significant development.
