General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIt seems to me that repug legislators have discovered that they can
pass ANY legislation they want "in state", with impunity.
See abortion restriction laws, don't say gay laws, concealed weapons with no permit laws, and laws restricting the teaching of history.
These are but some of the unprecedented laws that have been passed just this year.
It is my feeling that they have only begun to shove authoritarianism down our throats. They have a taste for it now and like sharks that sense blood in the water, will rush forward to enact even more draconian legislation on us.
I wish people could see this for what it is, a move towards an authoritarian state. It scares me very much.
GOTV.

(17,308 posts)Judging by the moves the states are making, it is working like a champ. My state is becoming more repressive by the day; if the legislature is in session the people are losing. (Florida)
One of these days, the Republican voters are going to wake up and find that they got what they asked for. They ain't gonna like it when the Fascist gain complete control and the first thing they do is go after the people's guns.

(18,898 posts)These are republicans and they're all about small government, free market capitalism, and no government interference intruding into your lives. Right?
Or was that last week's republicans? 🤔

(13,311 posts)always said that they want no intrusion in to peoples lives, but they never meant it. All you have to do is look at their stance on abortion. One day they will go to far in these republican states and anger many of their own and things will flip-I hope.

(12,626 posts)Now that they have a 6-3 majority with 4/6 being totally onboard with christian-fascism, and the other two willing to tag along, its Party Time.
Meanwhile nobody in the Republican leadership has been indicted for crimes associated with the attempted coup.
We should all be thinking about life in a fascist state and what that means.

(1,383 posts)I am trudging through a book entitled In The Garden Of Beasts. It's about an American diplomat's family in 1930's Germany.
The foundations of fascism is being developed right before our very eyes. Baby steps and incrementally but it is developing at a steady rate.
I am now a proud owner of a 9mm Hellcat. The wife too but she prefers a Glock 48. I told my wife she is not allowed to die until she gets 2 or more fascists. If they come, scan the pack for the young ones preferably with wedding bands. Not the older ones.
We will not be rounded up. I will die a free man and will NOT live in a fascist state.
BUT let's hope it never comes to that.
Cheers!

(20,865 posts)can overcome rigged elections. Our DOJ did nothing to stop the Cyber Ninjas which flamed the Big Lie and gave free rein to states to purge honest election officials and replace them with Magats. Fraudits spread across the country.
Day 63 since the Michigan AG sent the fake elector referral to the Feds.

(4,999 posts)Not really. Sure they use those issues to stir up a fringe minority in the populace, but they really could care less. It is a means to an end.
It's still the money and power they are after. (Power only to guarantee the money)
I have come to the conclusion they are playing the long game, once again.
I believe, they are deathly afraid of changing demographics, which will completely erode their power in many states.
Those demographics:
. Trend towards less religion in younger voters.
. Younger voters in general starting to really wake up to climate change.
. Voters of any skin color other than white.
. As boomers retire in California, even a small exodus out of California to any one state could dramatically shift the electorate. California is friggin HUGE, and when the boomers retire, their real estate can fund a lot of movement to other states with lower costs of living, and give the people a nice nest egg to boot. I would guess many densely populated blue areas like NYC are similar
If you are a small-er population state under GOP control (think, ID, AZ, WY, KS, MS, MT), how do you combat that eventual outcome?
I believe, one sure answer, while you still have GOP control, is to pass the most insane, inhumane legislation possible, that only the reddest of red voters would like, and the more middle of the road red voters will at least tolerate.
Blue voters in state, over the long run, will tend to leave. Blue voters in other states, especially California, NYC etc, will find these laws so repellent they will tend to stay put, or move to other blue states. The voters who are going to willingly move to your insane state are going to be red voters -- by a very large percentage.
It's like socialogical gerrymandering. Instead of moving lines around different populations, they are moving the populations between those lines.
I believe that is what they are doing.

(6,265 posts)saying to the RW brownshirts and their families are...we will put those 'others' back in their place, jail underfoot or a grave. And you will be able to help. The trump army thinks it will be able to take over this country and get their Fuhrer and his grifting administration back in power. Can you see a Huckabee back at the podium for press secretary briefings? Or even some RW puppet of Putin's giving news conferences again? They want trump back in power to TRY to put us, liberals, where they think we belong. See above. and one more restriction to add to your list, voting restriction laws to lower our numbers of voters. This upcoming election will tell it all about their plans to turn America into a fascist state Putin will love.

(12,626 posts)In my state and in other states they are going after teachers and public education using the same tactics. Laws are being created that prohibit teachers from discussing a wide range of topics, enforced through bounties from civil suits. Along with that they are pushing separate laws requiring public access to all teaching materials categorized by individual teachers. This will make it easy for bounty hunters to target specific teachers.

(1,664 posts)The question will be States rights yet again. Does a minority have the right to impose its will on the majority, will those states now moving to medieval laws be able to enforce their will on others. Recall that South Carolinas complaint was indeed states rights, specifically the federal government not aggressively enforcing the fugitive slave acts in anti-slave states. Given that the 6 person majority seems to feel no obligation to the last 160 years of precedent if it doesnt suit them I think the answer to that will be yes.

(24,355 posts)Once people start feeling- I mean REALLY FEELING- the consequences of these laws, they will react very negatively to the politicians whom voted for them and vote them out of office. LGBTQ+ people are not going to stop existing, neither are women, nor POC. People with Uteruses are not going to give up birth control just to be broodmares for Quiverfull. They can pass whatever laws they want and it's going to harm people but people are not going to like them nor accept them and I imagine that, at some point, they are going to revolt. Either that, or they'll find ways to just leave the state. At some point, these legislatures are going to keep hunting for more and more scapegoats to legislate and when they can't find anybody else they haven't sufficiently repressed or "owned", they'll start fighting among themselves. After all, one of the more historically important reasons that the founding fathers put a wall between Church and State was to ensure that we don't wind up in a series of sectarian conflicts promoted by our leaders. I fear that we are all about to learn (even the current SCOTUS) new appreciation for why religion being imposed on everybody else by our leaders is a BAD idea.
