EDIT: SORRY EVERYONE. IT APPEARS UKRAINE WILL BE GETTING MORE OF UPGRADED SOVIET ERA S-300S. THE S-300 WAS DEVELOPED TO DEFEND AGAINST AIRCRAFT AND CRUISE MISSILESEARLIER POST ON PATRIOTS
ThebPatriot (MIM-104) is a long-range, all-altitude, all-weather air defence system to counter tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and advanced aircraft. It is produced by Raytheon in Massachusetts and Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control in Florida.
The increased range MSE gives the missile a more powerful rocket motor for added thrust and larger fins for increased manoeuvrability against faster and more sophisticated ballistic and cruise missiles. The MSE began flight testing in May 2008.
The PAC-3 MSE is the baseline interceptor for the multinational medium extended air defence system (MEADS) under a contract placed in February 2008. The missile was test fired using the Patriot system in May 2011. Lockheed Martin was awarded a $68.9m contract in July 2012 to prepare the PAC-3 production line for the PAC-3 MSE missile.
In December 2012, the PAC-3 MSE destructed a tactical ballistic missile (TBM) target at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, US.

(9,225 posts)Yes it's the MIM-104. That is the only long-range system the United States has deployed.

(9,225 posts)should be invaluable to Ukraine. MiG's are sitting ducks. The Russians do have a stealth fighter, the Sukhoi Su-57. but they have not deployed it yet.

(8,286 posts)Russian made SAMs and also long range. So far the US has decline to send Patriot missiles to Ukraine seemingly in part because of needing people trained on the systems.

(9,225 posts)If, say the U.S. would be buying more from Poland - it would seem to be semantic not getting the MiGs as well.
ColinC
(8,286 posts)Much more would be quite helpful to their situation. Of course the US was against the mig deal. They at least so far seem to be completely on board with this one for some reason. But regardless, they are likely getting some solid SAMs.

(9,225 posts)"we have identified and are helping Ukraine acquire additional longer-range anti-aircraft systems and the munitions for those systems"
That fits the s-300.

(12,792 posts)Patriot missiles require months of training and, therefore, can't be sent to Ukraine, especially since they require US personnel to operate them. Has this been resolved somehow? classified?

(9,963 posts)Im sure there would be takers. And announce nothing. The less Russia knows, the better.

It would likely take months to train the Ukrainian military how to operate the system, according to people familiar with the technology.

(4,430 posts)The USA is going to help Ukraine by helping facilitate S-300 missiles now owned by other countries. Poland has S-300s as does Moldova, Turkey, and a number of Eastern European NATO countries.
We arent giving them Patriot systems- those are both very expensive and complex, and would take a long time to teach Ukrainian crews to operate.

(8,286 posts)I think the assumption is that the US will give them the Patriots because they are trying to give them SAMs. But it would probably make more sense in the long run to provide S 300s given the obstacles of needing to train on a foreign system. The news has been about trying to find somebody to supply s-300s and Slovakia seems to be one prime candidate for it.
S-300s are probably about as affective as Patriots.

(8,286 posts)Honestly I'm still celebrating the fact they are getting SAMs. Things seem like they are going to look a lot better soon!

(17,911 posts)If we were to provide them, it will take a bit of time for Ukrainians to become proficient. Much more involved than simple, point-and-shoot MANPADs. That's certainly part of the calculus. In case of a collapse (small risk at this point, but still a risk), we'll have to destroy them or get them out quick which might be dicey.

(17,911 posts)My point was, giving them PAC-3s is a bit hazardous given it contains classified components and systems and it would take a while for Ukrainians to figure out how to use it effectively. Hell, I'd like to give them the full arsenal, but that ain't happening.
