It joined the CIS, the CSTO, and the EAEU. In '96, it created the union of Russia and Belarus, a supranational confederation. The US has imposed stiff sanctions on the nation over the course of the past 25 years, and Belarus suspended its participation in the Eastern Partnership program in June 2021.

None of this suggests Belarus wants any part of an anti-Russian bloc of alliances. Heck, I would have bet ten bucks Lukashenko would have sent his troops in after Russia had ensured victory to get some of that pie.

Anti-gov forces at work, maybe? Unrelated terrorism with its own goals or agendas? A dark attempt by Putin to blame Ukraine?

All of a sudden, I live in interesting times.
