overturned, a report saysWealthy Russian oligarchs looking for US lawyers to try to overturn their sanctions may have a tough time.
Lawyers in the US are allowed to work for sanctioned people but many no longer want to, with one litigator calling the cases "radioactive," according to a report by the New York Post.
The West has imposed heavy sanctions on Russia in an attempt to pressure President Vladimir Putin to end the invasion of Ukraine. As well as targeting banks, the West has sanctioned Russian elites and oligarchs, freezing their assets and in some cases limiting travel. Individuals hit by US sanctions include USM Holdings founder Alisher Usmanov, Rosneft CEO Igor Ivanovich Sechin, and top figures in Russia's banking and finance sector.
These oligarchs have "too much at stake and too much to lose" to not contest the sanctions, a person with knowledge of the situation told the Post. But to overturn US sanctions, oligarchs have to take the Office of Foreign Assets Control to federal court, the Post reported.

Putin has an inner circle of intelligence bureaucrats and military heads that area his "made men". The Oligarchs are just crime boss type of fellow travellers who make it easy for him because he makes it easy for them.
He's gotten rid of more than a few other the years when they decided he wasn't their "cup of tea", as it were.

White & Case is closing its Moscow office and ceasing all representation of Russian and Belarusian state-owned entities, making it one of the latest law firms to exit the country following Russias invasion of Ukraine.
We are horrified by the terrible events taking place in Ukraine and condemn Russias unjustified invasion, a White & Case spokesperson said in a statement Friday. White & Case stands with the people of Ukraine.
Debevoise & Plimpton, which previously said that it was terminating several Russian client relationships and will not take on any new clients in Moscow, is also closing its office in the city, the firm said.
At least 15 global law firms have announced plans to shutter offices since the invasion began. On Thursday, Winston & Strawn, Baker Botts, Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance and Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner all said they would cease operations in Moscow.
The law firms are joined by corporations exiting Russia, with British American Tobacco Plc saying it will leave the country. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. has said it would withdraw from Russia, and J.P. Morgan Chase said it would unwind its business there.

I remember when Bob Strauss of Akin Gump was the Ambassador to Russia and the firm opened an office for him.
