Joe Manchin offers absurd rationale for opposing electric vehicles

U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin came under fire Monday after his recent remarks about government support for electric vehicles made the rounds on social media and suggested that the West Virginia Democrat — known for sabotaging his own party's agenda — either doesn't understand how EVs work or believes he can get away with misleading comments about them.

"Washington Post" columnist Catherine Rampell noted in a tweet that Manchin told an energy conference in Texas on Friday that "I'm very reluctant to go down the path of electric vehicles... I'm old enough to remember standing in line in 1974 trying to buy gas — I remember those days. I don't want to have to be standing in line waiting for a battery for my vehicle, because we're now dependent on a foreign supply chain — mostly China."

While the final version of the infrastructure bill that Manchin championed and President Joe Biden signed last year included $7.5 billion to boost EV ownership and charging capacity nationwide, the senator also criticized Democrats' efforts to increase that investment to $85 billion, saying that he has "a hard time understanding" the use of public money for such efforts.

Some critics suggested Manchin truly doesn't get how electric vehicles work. While there is a variety of EVs, from conventional and plug-in hybrids to fuel cell cars to battery electric vehicles, BEVs are powered by batteries that are built into the cars and recharged with grid electricity.

Or maybe the campaign contributions (as well his half-million/year in stock dividends) from of King Coal have simply convinced him that technological progress benefiting a planet is no better than Iron Sulfide to his wallet.

Panasonic wants to build a car battery factory in KS or OK. Maybe they will build more eventually.

station and fill my 13 gallon tank which will take me 300 to 400 miles. Try that with an electric car.

Won't be long until you can do that, especially with a charging port in your garage or parking lot, but you can't do it today. Hybrids may be the best deal for the foreseeable future.

And the grid is straining now-- imagine the southwest groaning under the addition of all these new car chargers.

But we'll solve the problems, just like we dealt with all those air conditioners and microwaves.

90% of our miles are electric (soon to be powered from our rooftop).

The few miles we do go beyond the electric range of the Volt and RAV4 are at about 40 mpg. In an average month, we buy three gallons of gasoline.

The oil companies are constantly scaring people about the horrors and risks of clean energy. DON'T BUY THEIR PROPAGANDA!

World peace will be closer at hand if we take the power away from the oil dictators.

The Federal Gov't needs to solicit the major automakers for a $25K EV that will go 250 miles and have room for 5.

And then pre-order a ton of them (1 million?)

And then have the Fed Gov't underwrite the auto loans with no interest. 10 years, 200/mo.

And then give incentives to reduce the payment amount monthly.

I'd suggest something boxy, a hatchback kinda' like a VW Golf.

He’s forgotten why he was sent to DC by his constituents. While people in WV suffer from poverty, low wages, drug addiction, covid and unemployment he’s off looking for a gaggle of news hounds to stand in front of.

Be sure to get his “good” side he’s keeping a scrapbook of his appearances. 🤮

Technology is being developed to convert coal waste to cobalt, manganese and other rare-earth elements.
