At the individual level, there are several ways to reduce carbon emissions as people move from place to place, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said during his South by Southwest town hall session Wednesday.
One is to make car trips from point A to point B more environmentally friendly with such technologies as electric vehicles. Another is to expand public transit to reduce the number of one-person car trips. A third, he said, is to make some trips unnecessary by building communities to be more walkable and bikeable.
Buttigieg also spoke about some areas of focus for the Transportation Department safety, climate change and equity and went through upcoming changes people can expect to see through the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill President Joe Biden signed into law late next year.
Heres a rundown of Buttigieg's visit to Austin:
Different transportation decisions
Buttigieg talked about the importance of reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector, as well as the need to make our transportation infrastructure more resilient to climate change catastrophes.
Every transportation decision is a climate decision whether we recognize it or not, he said. The biggest sector in terms of contributions to greenhouse gas emissions is the transportation sector. Which means in my view thats a challenge for us in transportation to be the biggest part of the solution.
