BBC: 'It appears no-one was killed' - Bombed Mariupol Theater.

The shelter beneath the Mariupol Theater, where civilians were hiding, is intact. The Deputy Mayor is hopeful that all have survived.

It is worth remembering that in the Soviet era, many shelters and basements were designed to give some protection against a nuclear attack. That makes it difficult for Russian troops to overrun Ukrainian cities.

EDIT: Heard on the BBC World Service, Newshour, about 15 minutes ago.

They have been used to hide from Nazis, from Communists, and from many invaders in history.

From what I have been hearing, most of the people were already taking shelter down there before the shelling started. Don't know if it is part of the catacomb system, or just a basement, but it appears to have done its job, whatever the case. Thank goodness, if this is true.

So, not a catacomb.

I was just making a somewhat related point that Ukraine has more defenses than we might realize.

Bombs driven over state lines by their mom killed hundreds in the theater before the defenders of the island were killed by naval bombardment.
