Anyone looking for signs that embattled and isolated Russia might soften its position would not have found much hope in the increasingly belligerent words of President Vladimir Putin.
With his invasion of Ukraine floundering and his economy teetering, Putin doubled down Wednesday turning his baleful glare on Russians who are against the invasion or who sympathize with the West.
"The Russian people will always be able to distinguish true patriots from scum and traitors, and will simply spit them out like an insect in their mouth onto the pavement," he said, shoulders hunched and staring down the barrel of the camera.
It was the latest speech that has surprised and alarmed many who study Putin. He has adopted what they say is an emotional, ranting tone since he invaded Ukraine three weeks ago, a departure from the calculating persona of this former KGB officer.
"He's clearly angry, emotional and feels the need to speak in this very aggressive tone," said John Lough, an associate fellow at Londons Chatham House think tank.
Lough thinks the speech was clearly aimed at Russia's elites, some of whom he believes are privately dismayed about the failure of the war and the economic backlash it has inflicted at home.

(86,032 posts)I would speculate that not only is the war not going well for him and his ginormous ego, he was upstaged by Zelenskyy who got standing ovations from the governments of the world. And he out-machoed him in this fight, way too much for the supreme snowflake of snowflakes.
I am sure the reception Zelenskyy enjoys is a major weenie whack for him. He doesn't get so much feed back and drubbing, like our supreme fascist, he is like dry ice in a bucket of water level seething with anger and jealousy which makes him real dangerous.
If we're lucky, he's already sped things up to where he kills himself in a bunker.

(64,413 posts)Plutonium 238, the isotope easily able to go critical, has a half-life of 87 years.
Of course, Russian physicists know this so warheads 20 or more years old would reduce in concentration by at least 14%. That much loss would make the device incapable of detonation. No atomic detonation, no thermonuclear reaction.
But, they could replace and re-enrich every 10 years or so. Who knows?
If the weapons are U-235 based, they'd be good for a LONG time, since that half life is >700 million years. There would be more chemical entropy of the high explosive than decay of the isotope.
Finally, given the propaganda & obfuscation of the old USSR, we don't know the effectiveness rate of their nukes, even when new. Are they, like US weapons, 99.999% likely to function, or are they 50:50?
Again, who knows?

(3,639 posts)Putin wants to be the one whom history records restored the Russian empire.
He wants this as perhaps his most important bucket list bullet-point.
If some are right, he is running out of time before kicking the bucket.
Desires impel actions and actions bring results, wanted and unwanted.
Desires also cloud clear consideration of cause and effect.
Desires thwarted birth anger and enough anger will turn into delusion.
Putin has a desire and chose to take action toward that end, but results are less than desired; and may end-up opposite.
Putin "chose poorly".
Putin will be repudiated.

(9,874 posts)more resentment he creates among others who may decide that hes crazy and needs to go. It might be a sniper, a waiter to poison him, or maybe even hauling him away to an unknown site. Im sure the Russian military has its own black ops sites. And God only knows what kind of nasty stuff the FSB has.
