Following NC and SC, Virginia to ban the "Carolina squat" modification to vehicles

COLUMBIA, S.C. —
A bill making it illegal to significantly raise the front end of a truck or other vehicle while lowering the back end has passed the South Carolina Senate.

Senators voted 33-1 on Thursday to ban what is commonly called the “Carolina Squat.”

North Carolina passed a law to ban the modification last September

Supporters of the bill said the changes are dangerous because, with the front end raised and pointing up, it prevents a driver from seeing pedestrians or smaller cars in front of them.

On Friday, Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced he plans to sign Senate Bill 777 which bans the dangerous “Carolina Squat” modification on vehicles.

Youngkin is scheduled to sign the bill banning the vehicle modification on Monday at 8 a.m.

The bill was introduced on an emergency basis after senators passed out flyers about the tragic death of Jody "BJ" Upton Jr. last month and how the potential dangers of the "Carolina Squat."

The trend is when vehicles are significantly lifted in the front so the front axle is lifted much higher than the rear axle.

Efforts to ban the truck were started by the family of BJ Upton, 27, who died in a Feb. 16, 2022 crash in Mecklenburg County. Upton died after his truck was hit by another truck traveling in the other direction crossed over the center line and crashed into his.

"The truck was smashed…Completely, almost like in a ball and it was like indented within the ditch," said Upton's future sister-in-law, Ann Taylor Kallam, who arrived at the scene shortly after it happened. "It was just a horrific sight."

The driver of the other truck, Anthony Newcomb of Chase City, 19, sustained minor injuries in the crash. Newcomb was charged with reckless driving.

Kallam said Newcomb's truck was a "Carolina Squat" and the family believes those modifications played a big role in the deadly outcome of the crash.

"We can't help but think, what if it was another vehicle? What if? What if that truck that hit him wasn't squatted? What if the truck wasn't squatted and the guy could actually see the road?" said Kallam.

here is a 7 year old Reddit comment asking about it

The Carolina Squat actually began from southern California. It is also referred to as the California (Cali) Lean or the Tennessee lean. The trend is inspired by Baja racing, which was popular in the desert terrains of California. In racing, it actually has a function. Since the Baja is raced on a hilly surface, that means there are lots of jumps. The idea is, when a Baja truck hits a jump at a higher speed, to land its rear first, thus avoiding nose-dive, which could potentially total the truck and would mean the end of the race for that competitor.

More evidence that trucker freedumbers don’t need or use a truck.

“The trend is when vehicles are significantly lifted in the front so the front axle is lifted much higher than the rear axle”… not really a good description.
