(17,881 posts)about Russian might dating back to the 50's. A Potemkin military once again. Not the first time the Russians have fooled the west into thinking their military is something it's not.
I've been calling them a paper tiger since December and caught huge amounts of flack over it. Turns out the Russians are true to form and a number of analysts who don't fall for slick hype were right.
got to wear your flak jacket, all times Russian military ain't all that as the paper tiger Pukin has proven to the world.

(10,135 posts)Unless you think they aren't very good and need to be upfront to control everything.
If Putin is a micromanaging dictator, he would see himself as the controlling power behind the troops. So, he does not want or need his Generals' advice and strategic experience. He needs managers up front because Putin isn't going out to get himself killed.
Dictators always think they know better than anyone else. So, Generals are kind of useless to a dictator. Especially if a good Generals earns the loyalty and respect of the troops. Then they are a threat to the dictator's power and control.

(53,936 posts)Meaning it's not a World War I type trench warfare where there are clearly delineated "front lines." A lot of what's going on in Ukraine right now is urban warfare and maneuvering their tank and APC convoys around suburbs and small towns. Any officer out in the open can become a target.
Farmer-Rick
(10,135 posts)Of course there are no trenches.
But you know where the fighting is. You know where most of the action is going down. You know the war zone, it changes hourly sometimes, and you don't send your top troop leaders there to die and lose all that strategic information they have acquired.
Unless you don't really feel you need them. Then yeah, run them through the road you know is under sniper surveillance. That's when you make them establish headquarters in an area that has not been secured. You shouldn't leave your Generals out in the open to become targets.
This could also be due to overconfidence. You think it will be easy and you don't take proper precautions. But this shouldn't have happened 5 times. You should have learned after the first dead General.
These so called Generals are doing what we would probably have Colonel's, or 0-6's doing, maybe even 0-5's. (Of course now a days we would probably just use mercenaries) We don't have a dictatorship so Generals are usually fully trained and necessary for war. We want them to inspire and lead troops, at least we use to before Cheney.

(7,512 posts)Russian generals need to be on the front line for two reasons. The first is that Russia made the mistake of blowing up most of Ukraine's cell towers in the early days of the war; it was reported maybe a week or so ago that this has been problematic for Russia since their encrypted communication channels rely on 3g and/or 4g cell phone service. The second is that war is going poorly and there is immense pressure from the top to straighten everything out. Sitting in the rear doing nothing because their communications are out isn't going to get a general a very good performance review.

(10,135 posts)Putin really didn't think this war through. He's like a toddler throwing a tantrum.
What a waste of human life all around.

(9,958 posts)Zelensky is correct in saying that they need air support to stop the missiles. It seems they could easily defeat the ground forces if they and their cities weret being bombed constantly. Im hoping that US intelligence can tell them exactly where the missiles are coming from, so they can use donated weapons to taken out the source, at least the ground-based ones. The worrisome ones are those fired from ships on the Black Sea, like the ones that hit Lviv yesterday. I have no clue how you take those out without a direct attack on the ships. News reports showed several ships hovering off the coast of Odessa like vultures.

(454 posts)Additional air power might be nice, but two things he rarely -- if ever -- mentions will make way more difference: counter-missiles (like the S-300s which are on their way) and counter-battery weapons. Ukrainian forces have been doing great work with the anti-tank missiles, but those have a hard time finding artillery. I thought I read somewhere that Ukraine is getting some counter-batteries, too.
So the S-300s will take down many missiles (Patriots would do better, but require too much training) and counter-batteries to take the fight back to the howitzers being used to commit war crimes.

(43 posts)Rather, it is a consequence of Russia's fubar'd logistics efforts. When the supply column stalls because the enemy disables the lead vehicles... Morale plummets as the drivers try to hide their tanks and supply trucks behind trees (or get mired in the mud)... desertions spike... the general staff orders the unit commander to visit the line, unsnarl the mess and get the convoy moving. Obviously he cannot do that from a rear area. The Ukrainian sniper on over-watch notes the arrival and announces his presence with a single shot.

(2,967 posts)I'd bet a dollar the whole Russian military is riddled, top to bottom, with Ukranian intel operatives and assets. Locations are being dialed in directly to sniper teams. You don't rack up a count like this without an awesome, well organized system. Ukranians are getting shit done. I'm blown away by how effective they are.
Imagine being command staff in the Russian army right now. Sucks to be you.
