The civilians were allegedly taken to camps where Russians checked their phones and documents and then forcibly moved some of them to remote cities in Russia.

Russian forces are deporting thousands of Ukrainian citizens against their will to Russia, Mariupol’s City Council claimed in a Telegram post. The information has not yet been verified by U.S. officials or CNBC.

“What the occupiers are doing today is familiar to the older generation, who saw the horrific events of World War II, when the Nazis forcibly captured people. It is hard to imagine that in the 21st century people will be forcibly deported to another country,” Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boychenko said in the post translated by NBC.

Officials said the occupiers removed people from the Left Bank district and shelters “in the building of a sports club,” where mostly women and children were taking cover. The Mariupol residents were taken to “filtration camps,” where their cell phones and documents were checked, it added. After the inspection, some were taken to Russia, the post said.

from the start was to secure Donbas, Dobetsk, and a solid strip from Crimea to the Russian border as part of Russia. The other attacks on Ukrainians would then be to put negotiation pressure on Ukraine to give up eastern parts of the country, and to punish them for resisting.

I just find it hard to understand how they could get a huge bunch of people together with no one shooting them. Maybe I just don't understand the logistics of it.

Deport as many Ukrainian citizens to various parts of Russia as possible and replace them with Russia friendly citizens. So they have more supporters in Ukrain thus making it easier for Russia to hold it.

the ones I remember, are of myself in a war zone. I am fleeing or fighting... last night I was being herded. And this is with minimal news viewing compared to my normal habits.

I am horrified that this atrocity is happening and we can do nothing to stop it. Because of nukes. I recall the story of Oppenheimer whispering "I am become death, destroyer of worlds" (a line from the Bhagavad Gita) when he viewed the first test.

This is where we are. My heart and soul are with the Ukranian people. I want to see them victorious, happy, healthy, thriving. I still hope. But this news is breaking my heart.💔
