last month I got a break thru case.
I had/have issues with taste. My smell is fine.
I find food fall into 4 categories. No taste (which I am grateful for right now), Metallic taste, Bitter taste, and spoiled/rancid taste.
The metallic and bitter taste can range to something tolerable, and I can eat something/drink something to get food in my stomach but sometimes it gets so bad I stop eating.
Rancid the man issue is water. I try and drink it and I find myself spitting it out like t is vile. for liquids I have been drinking what I can tolerate. I have been eating a lot of Italian ice as I am able to put spoonful in my mouth and let t dissolve to quinch my mouth (which is dry for the most part.) I can't take citrus, but Root beer flavor has no taste. I have been using pedlite pops, popsicles and watermelon fruit bars (but sometimes I get a bitter after taste) .
I am finding it hard to eat a meal a cup of soup keeps me from having my stomach growling but eat more like a normal meal and I get nauseated. I've been told to pick thru out the day but it makes me ill doing that.
I was told by 2 doctors this could last weeks or months or longer and I am wonderng it anyone has/have this issue and any suggetstions on what to do.

(26,109 posts)when I had chemo I had the metallic taste. Salty stuff, lemon (not sweet), and black pepper tasted ok. Sweets were out, especially chocolate. Im sorry youre going thru this, and hope it gets better for you soon.

(72,377 posts)test looking for stuff and literally run out of calories doing so. I make and freeze stuff so if it's not tasty for a while I can come back to it. Sour, spicy, and savory are somewhat more reliable. I eat a lot of cheese and put various hot pepper seasonings on all kinds of stuff. Spicy, cheesy egg beaters are one of my main dinners. Hot temps are better for me than cold. Ice cream is essentially flavorless. I make frozen yogurt and load in dark cocoa or nut butters.
In your case, find fats you can tolerate as they are high cal. Add olive oil to soup, nut butter to yogurt, butter to whatever.

My issue is I am fat and I have had a few people say. use this to your advantage and lose weight.

(1,114 posts)Please, I don't mean to offend but I found this to be liberating when I am down about that stuff.

and the only way to get those is to eat.
I am really sorry for what you are going through, and speaking of quality, there are some high quality responses here which I am trying to commit to memory just in case.
Hugs to you.

(1,955 posts)it took me a few weeks to get it back. Happy day when I could stick my head in a pickle jar and actually smell it.

(8,706 posts)Years ago, after I was poisoned by a Malathion exposure - I found it difficult to swallow water. Friends brought me many different waters (like 20 different waters) - store bought and well water. I was able to tolerate Mountain Valley in a glass bottle and my boy friends well water - not my well water. You might have to try lots of water brands and sources - hopefully you will find one.
I developed MCS and severe food sensitivity. Severe food sensitivity lasted about 6 months and then I could gradually eat more foods. I only ate 3 foods (2 fruits and yogurt) for 6 months. Hopefully yours will resolve too. Have you tried fresh fruits - you might buy lots of different fruits to try to see if you can tolerate any. Also you might try fermented foods. This is a common problem for people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity- severe food sensitivity. Whats weird is that with MCS, most have increased sensitivity to perfume and chemical smells but with covid people lose their ability to smell.

(12,470 posts)After throat surgery.
I could not taste sweet.
It was weird how things I normally liked became inedible. Omg arizona tea was so bad I had to spit it out and rinse my mouth out. Had it for about a month. My diet got significantly limited by it.
One thing I did that was interesting I sampled a lot of different honeys.
I could taste the flowers it came from other than that it was tasteless.
All I can say is find calorie dense foods, and carbs, proteins and source of fiber you can stand.
Also take multivitamins.
I really feel bad for what you are going through.
I hope you can find foods and drinks you can stand soon.

(2,888 posts)Or, if you can, override the urge to spit up so that you can get a lot of hydration, to help with your health. I get that might not be possible though.

(11,769 posts)But I can't tolerate toothpaste. I gag just at the smell. I've been using baking soda. Also, anything sweet is unappealing. I used to love a custard filled maple bar, but now days it's a, Meh. I have been eating black licorice when wanting sweets. I nibble the little Scottie dog tails and heads off first! 😄
