1. I did a 6 month detail in Afghanistan in 2011-2012.

We were on our way to an FOB (forward operating base) one day and passed a tank graveyard. Not exaggerating, there were hundreds of old Soviet tanks piled up. Tanks just aren’t that effective when fighting an insurgency. I know Ukraine isn’t exactly an insurgency at this point, and the terrain is much different, but it’s being fought like one to some degree. And like Afghanistan, the insurgents are being supplied with modern weapons. It’s very costly for the Russians, also in manpower casualties.

From what I understand it’s the soldier casualties that really caused the soviets to pull out of Afghanistan. The troops became very resistant to being sent out where they could be picked off. I don’t blame the Russian troops so much as their leadership (Putin). He came to power after that conflict and probably is arrogant enough to think he knows better.
