(11,443 posts)He actually flattened Warsaw twice. The first was 1939 at the start of the war, and the second was 1945 just before the Russians took it from him. Stalin actually had his troops delay taking Warsaw because he wanted Hitler to destroy it.

(8,279 posts)50,000 deaths in the London bombing seems far worse than what has happened in Ukraine so far. It gives me hope that Ukraine can come out on top -si.ilar to the UK (of course the UK didn't have actual griundforces entering their country, I think)

(3,841 posts)and was the scene of several major battles during the war. Kharkiv was actually the last Nazi victory and was retaken in 1943 after being liberated, though soon after, the Soviet army came back through and liberated the city again. The city itself was bombed, shelled with artillery, including heavy guns and the majority of it was destroyed. In executing a scorched earth policy as they retreated, most of what was left in Kharkiv was set on fire by retreating Germans.
But what is happening to it now is just as tragic, and just as unnecessary. Large sections of it have been destroyed. It seems like the biggest targets in Ukraine are Russian speaking areas.
