Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) disputed NBC host Chuck Todd on Sunday over the suggestion that President Joe Biden miscalculated when he called Russian President Vladimir Putin a "war criminal."
"President Biden called Putin a war criminal this week," Todd told Murphy. "There are a lot of people who agree with that assessment but question whether the president himself should have personalized it. Where are you in this?"
"I don't think you can do anything other than call Vladimir Putin a war criminal," Murphy replied. "He is! I mean, what he's doing right now as we speak, targeting children, maternity wards, schools inside Ukraine clearly crosses a line."

(17,099 posts)Vladimir Putin with Slobodan Miloević is just plain silly. There are a million different circumstances, starting with Russia having the world's largest nuclear arsenal.
Chuck knows that, but he's trying to be cute.

(46,806 posts)I remember when Todd was the go-to analysis guy, kind of the Steve Kornacki dude. He was reasonably good at that, but he never had the personality to host an entire show. They tried him out in several time slots and he wasn't terribly impressive, so they gave him the coveted Meet the Press show! The King of Mediocrity gets Meet the Press? They had so much talent to choose from and that is who they chose?

(46,806 posts)but that doesn't necessary make him a good prospect for host of a show. Maybe he is more effective behind the scenes.
I just read that it was Tim Russert who brought Todd to NBC in 2007. That may have given him some influence.

(46,576 posts)No, you Toad. That's Zelensky's decision to make. We're just making sure that Putin has no safe quarters. Calling him a war criminal weakens his leverage in his negotiations with Zelensky, because he has no allies, and no where to go.

then our guys are obligated to take his obvious bias and shove it down his throat .when Chucky questions a Dem he always starts with a straw-man question pulled from the GOP playbook Chris Murphy pushed back and Chucky was visibly annoyed nice..

(694 posts)Or did Chuck Todd set himself up by the perfect question so Senator Murphy could jump right in and defend President Biden from the current critical sound bite?
Its hard to tell because Todd gets on my nerves in a bad way. But why would he post this if its such a smack down?
Regardless we got the good defense out there.

(32,356 posts)This doesn't sound like a "smack down" to me. It sounds like Todd understood that Murphy would of course defend the President and that's exactly what he did.
Murphy thanks Joe Biden for providing moral leadership, which is what we need right now. I didn't hear any push back from Chuck Todd on this, but that doesn't mean I like the guy. He just teed up an easy question for Senator Murphy, and Murphy was enthusiastic. Murphy confirms that Putin is a war criminal, and I didn't hear disagreement from Todd.

(7,266 posts)I love that Murphy responded with his remarks, but it's weird "Meet the Press" is using that clip to promote that idiot Chucky Cheesey, a very poor excuse for what could be a esteemed news worthy Sunday program.
Another confirmation for why it's important to cut the cord.

(13,311 posts)maybe? At least that is what someone else said in this discussion. I sure didnt like the two men that came after him on meet the press-especially Todd. Forget the first one-David?. I always thought Russert came across as a liberal, but he was tough when he did interviews.

(51,129 posts)And, I see every reason to discuss it and get that discussion out there. What is missing here is the context of the Putin slam, the International Court of Justice ruled his invasion fits the legal definition of a war crime. Biden's timing has important context in this regard.

Not defending Todd, but that's a question for already softball thinkers, and Murphy has the kind of temperament that emphasizes important international language without being offensive.

If anyone were to actually think Todd isn't an idiot, he proves them wrong every Sunday (and often several times during the week, during his equally awful daily show).

(101,160 posts)Whereas WHO has established supply lines from its warehouse in Lviv to many other cities, it faces challenges, he said, noting that critical supplies are ready for United Nations joint convoys to enter difficult areas, but so far, we have not been successful. The convoy to Sumy, which included a WHO truck carrying medical supplies, was unable to enter, while loads ready for Mariupol remain in staging areas, he said, emphasizing: Access to these, and other areas, is now critical.

So for President Biden to note that Putin bears ultimate responsibility for the crimes is not exactly boundary-pushing.
