Not that it's anyone's business, but I had my tubes tied when I was in my 30s. Under this law, if I wanted to purchase medical marijuana, I'd have to disclose that, OR get a pregnancy test any time I wanted to buy medical marijuana?
Of course the key phrase here is "Not that it's anyone's business..."
But I had a thought. Want to make the heads of every GOP legislator in Alabama explode? Suggest that women have to prove that they're not pregnant to buy a gun. That would constitute a sort of "background check." They just passed a law limited background checks.
I mean, a gun in the home is potentially dangerous to the unborn too, right?

(5,897 posts)"Fuck your feelings" bullshit they used to say in 2020, assuming the former guy was going to win over sleepy Joe. Once the biggest loser lost, if anyone from our side said "fuck your feelings" they were instantly triggered. Makes my blood boil but in no way am I surprised that Alabama is doing this, since I grew up there (HS/college).

(32,634 posts)Of course you're absolutely right that forcing women to take a pregnancy test in order to purchase MM is ridiculous, intrusive, and expensive to administer. Of course they have no right to intrude on women's privacy. It goes without saying that no man in Alabama would consider such a stomping on their OWN right to privacy, but if they're stomping on women's privacy - and potentially liberal women's privacy - well go right ahead then.
Such hogwash! But it needs to be fought on its own failure, or lack of merit. To suggest some kind of "tit-for-tat" law would be counter-productive I think.

Forced Labor, Revisited: The Thirteenth Amendment and Abortion

I. The basic argument The Thirteenth Amendment reads as follows:
1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
2. Congress shall have the power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
My claim is that the amendment is violated by laws that prohibit abortion. When women are compelled to carry and bear children, they are subjected to "involuntary servitude" in violation of the amendment. Abortion prohibitions violate the Amendment's guarantee of personal liberty, because forced pregnancy and childbirth, by compelling the woman to serve the fetus, creates "that control by which the personal service of one man [sic] is disposed of or coerced for another's benefit which is the essence of involuntary servitude."6
Such laws violate the amendment's guarantee of equality, because forcing women to be mothers makes them into a servant caste, a group which, by virtue of a status of birth, is held subject to a special duty to serve others and not themselves.

Parents can't be compelled to donate their organs to their child, even to save the child's life. Why does a fetus have more claim on a woman's body than her child who has been born?

(6,278 posts)but it most definitely was not a part of it.
I have always believed that this should be the main argument for keeping abortion regulated by the medical community rather than politicians.
You should make an original post about this, as it sincerely needs to be discussed.

(5,499 posts)The current court would say pregnancy was not the original intent of this law and that no one is forcing women to get pregnant. Not that I agree with that argument.
But where is could be interesting is in the case of rape, an argument could be made that the woman was forced into the pregnancy.
But I still think with this court, it wouldn't fly. And the original attorneys who argued Roe must not have thought it was a winning argument.

(12,650 posts)Anyone who buys or serves a pregnant woman alcohol, or heck, even if she had beer in her fridge or alcohol in the home bar, they're liable by risking fetal alcohol poisoning. Girls might just "wanna have fun", but it sure sounds like they're not going to be able to much longer once menses kicks in.
Let's see how long most Alabama women agree to be infantilised brood mates.
I know the elite ladies don't care, they can always get the "specialized" OBGYNs to ensure a safe and comfortable pregnancy and nannies to take care of their babies once they pop them out, but I don't think most women have those resources.

Does she have to continually send updates on her womb?
It would seem so.
Maybe they will invent some kind of monitor so they can keep tabs on Alabama womens state of pregnancies.
But yeah, guns booze cigarettes, have at it.
