There are too many people suffering through war and I feel bad twice in the fact that I didn't feel the same way when the victims of actions like this didn't look like me.

(46,037 posts)A small point in our defense, though. The other atrocities weren't all over the TV, which means the ethnocentrism was more systemic than individual. Not much of an excuse, but something to be aware of.

I have very uncomforatable feelings about recent U.S. invasions of sovereign countries, and from other countries, other aggressive actions across the globe. Might will never, ever make right. The invasion of Ukraine forces us to look in the mirror. I hope I am not comparing apples to oranges. The r's relied on fear-mongering to get us into Iraq. putin doesn't even have that excuse.

I'm going to consider permanently expanding it to encompass life in general. (Excluding the COVID virus, I'm pretty unapologetically biased against that one. From what I'm to understand there is controversy about if it really is 'alive')

(58,785 posts)sympathy. But isn't focusing on one's own unhappy reactions yet another sort of hypocrisy that doesn't put a single bite of food in a Ukrainian mouth?
I'm also pretty sure sympathetic suffering syndromes here, especially the opportunity their plight creates for self examination, wouldn't be adequately appreciated in Ukrainian basements.
Unless they stimulate donations of money to help, though...

(58,785 posts)I wouldn't have commented on your thread except that the subject ("me" ) has become a genre within Ukraine discussion. Understandable and no doubt inevitable. In a very real sense, to people everything must be and IS first about ourselves.

(58,785 posts)unfortunate (if not exactly strange) identification with people from an advanced, European, mostly Christian western nation whose lives and attitudes are/were strikingly similar to ours in America. Oh, the humanity?
I tend to see that as more normal and inevitable rather than only ugly. But those inspired by Ukraine to worry about themselves could work on it by turning off the 24/7 MSM coverage that they don't give atrocities in browner parts of the world. And turn on and read international coverage instead. Don't feed the beast, in self or corporate offices.
Otoh, war in Europe started by major superpower aggression is a huge development that is not about race, is about everyone, and deserves everyone's attention no matter where they are.
