(459 posts)...certainly tanks unsupported by infantry that can spot anti-tank weaponry are.
But I think this is unique to Russia and the current conflict. I doubt very much that US tanks would be nearly as vulnerable.

(17,884 posts)Seems drones and portable anti-tank missiles have the edge right now.

(1,896 posts)They're Russians, the non judicial punishment for missing ships movement is TAD assignment to tanks. Or maybe that was another detachment who couldn't find a war.

(66,293 posts)But there are likely a lot of reasons why the 6th got wiped out. We think of the tank as a blunt instrument used to mindlessly hammer the enemy. Hell, even our own armed forces refer to tank crewmen as 'dumb-ass tankers', thinking we're just as blunt and dull as our steel steeds.
But crewing a tank requires a great deal more subtlety and complex skill than a layman might think. Targeting an enemy tank, the tank's raison d'etre, takes a number of finely-honed skills that add up to more than just pointing the cannon in the right direction. Modern targeting computers take a lot of the guesswork out of tank gunnery, but they still have to be programmed correctly, and a tank gun that isn't boresighted (a task that ensures the gun is pointing at the same thing as the targeting crosshairs) properly is going to miss the target by a country mile.
Just like the equipment, the crew has to be honed to a fine edge so that they work flawlessly as a team. That takes huge amounts of training.
Just like their infantry, cutting and running the first chance they get, the Russian tankers seem to be of one mind when it comes to abandoning their tanks and hoofing it away from Ukrainian resistance. Skill, training, discipline, and commitment are everything in warfare. Those poor Russian boys got dragooned into this war, and don't seem to want to die for Putin.

(7,195 posts)Careful with this one.
A detachment is usually a platoon of tanks attached to an infantry company for an operation or assault.
Taking out a regiment is a whopper!

(17,884 posts)We can send lots more javelins, NLAWs, stingers, etc., etc. Where's Russia's nearly bottomless source of supply? Oh, that's right. They don't have one. So far, the Chinese ain't sharing. I don't expect them to. A weakened Russia serves their purposes.
