Roman Abramovich's $50 million Colorado mansion could become a sanctions target

A Rocky Mountain mansion owned by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich would likely be among the first assets frozen by the U.S. government if he is sanctioned by the White House in response to the war in Ukraine, according to attorneys and real-estate executives.

Among Abramovich's many global real-estate trophies is a 14,000-square-foot modern mega-home on 200 acres in Snowmass, Colorado, just outside of Aspen. The Russian billionaire, whose yacht fleet, soccer team and giant homes in London, France and St. Bart's gave him a high profile in the West, bought the property in 2008 for $36.5 million. Local brokers say the property would likely sell for well over $50 million given soaring prices — making it the second most expensive home ever sold in the Aspen area.

"It's an incredible property, and very rare," said Riley Warwick, co-founder of Aspen-based brokerage team Saslove & Warwick at Douglas Elliman Real Estate. "A lot of my clients have been asking about it."

Abramovich also owns a 5,500-square-foot chalet-style home in Snowmass Village, which he purchased in 2008 for $11.8 million, according to local property records. The property, just down the road from his bigger home, likely serves as a guest house, caretaker's house or ski house, since it's next to the slopes, local brokers say.

These mega-rich people around the world have too much money yet they want even more. They rarely ever spend time on their yachts or at their houses. What is the point? Aren't they already living in an unbelievably useless homes, which sit uninhabited. What is the point of being a "success" as a businessperson and sheer greed as a resident? They don't even utilize their vast fortunes. They sit empty and unused. Why? Greed must be a mental illness.

between the ultra wealthy, my ski lodge is bigger than your ski lodge, my Maserati is faster than your Ferrari. etc,etc
Where as poor people are happy their new $10 fishing pole works better than the old bamboo stick & string.
How much money they have or net worth is also in their bragging rights, proves I'm smarter than you because
I'm richer, another bragging right. The list is endless.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury on Wednesday released a list of 28 of the 50 Russian oligarchs that it is monitoring, but Snowmass Village homeowner Roman Abramovich was not on it.

After learning about the list, Pitkin County Commissioner Greg Poschman sent an email to Colorado Deputy Attorney General Kurtis Morrison. In the email, Poschman said Abramovich "is widely understood to be a longtime (Russian President Vladimir) Putin insider and a de facto supporter of Russian aggression in Ukraine."

Poschman said it would be a missed opportunity if Abramovich’s multimillion dollar properties in Pitkin County were liquidated and the money transferred overseas.

In 2008, Abramovich paid $36 million for a house on Ridge of Wildcat Drive and $12 million for a house on Divide Road.

Poschman, who consulted the Pitkin County attorney, said the county currently doesn’t have any authority in this matter unless there are any building-code violations at the properties.

According to a Wall Street Journal article I read in the last few days (I don't have a link) he has not been sanctioned because he owns several companies in the U.S. including a steel company. The U.S. is afraid of what will happen to the workers if he sanctioned. In addition Israel has requested he not been sanctioned because he is a major donor of Israel's Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem.
