As the Russian invasion nears the one month mark, the Ukrainian intelligence service claims to have unearthed a plot devised in the upper reaches of Russian society to dethrone the President.
... It is believed their preferred replacement is spy master and once top Putin sidekick Alexander Bortnikov, who has fallen out of favour with the Moscow despot over errors in the Ukraine war.
The elite plotters, according to Ukrainian intelligence, picked out the 70-year-old because they believe he could spearhead the restoration of economic ties with the west.

(17,308 posts)The old Nagant to the neck trick. You just don't lose that many high ranking officers KIA in such a short period of time. REMFs, especially ones with stars, generally avoid lead poisoning. The US averaged one flag officer a month killed in WWII, the most of them killed in air crashes not resulting from enemy action.

(15,226 posts)He was from Ukraine. Also there was a lot of accurate intelligence up to the invasion. Given the terrible Russian performance there is also the old Soviet doctrine of rewarding good military performance by not putting a bullet in the back of your head. There may well be battles east of Ukraine.
