Good question. Contrasted with our advanced in-combat approach to treating the wounded.

At the heart of it, I imagine it helps if you care about your troops.

Just like when they encircled Berlin near the end of WWII. Russians units were exchanging fire with other other Russian units on opposite sides of the city. They inflicted more casualties, than the Nazi’s could.
