(11,738 posts)Free Speech ONLY applies to government infringement and even that is not absolute.
You can say whatever you want, that is true, but that doesn't mean that you have to be allowed a platform and it certainly doesn't mean that you can say whatever you want without consequences.
If you incite violence against a specific target. You are liable for criminal actions
If you slander or libel anyone, you can be liable for damages.
If you use your speech to incite a panic that causes harm, you are liable for damages.
If you lie under oath, you are liable for potential criminal activity.
You can say what you want, but not in my house or my shop. I can kick you out of both for saying something that offends me.
Most employers can fire you for saying something offensive or damaging to their reputation.
You can loose you gig, your television show, etc... because people don't like what you said and have staged protest that the employer/venue finds potentially damaging to their bottom line.
You can be ridiculed mercilessly by other people using their free speech, as long as it doesn't cross the line into stalking and harassment.
Free Speech is a government issue. We can say what we want but we better be ready to take the consequences for it from our fellow citizens, who also have the right to speak and act in response to your speech.
