Ex-wife accuses top Missouri GOP Senate candidate of abuse

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens, now a leading Republican Senate candidate, was physically abusive and demonstrated such “unstable and coercive behavior” that steps were taken to limit his access to firearms, according to new allegations from his ex-wife revealed in court records on Monday.

The sworn affidavit from Sheena Greitens is part of an ongoing child custody dispute in Missouri. A public affairs professor at the University of Texas, she sought divorce from Eric Greitens after a sex scandal which led to his resignation as governor in June 2018. She's now asking the court to move the custody case to Austin in part to spare her children from renewed public attention as Eric Greitens tries to mount a political comeback.

An attorney for Sheena Greitens did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment. In an emailed statement, Greiten's campaign manager, Dylan Johnson, called the allegations “completely false" and “politically-motivated."

“His ex-wife is engaged in a last-ditch attempt to vindictively destroy her ex-husband," Johnson said. “Eric has always been a great Dad, who loves his boys and has always put them first, and that is why he is filing for full custody of his children."

Greitens's ex-wife accuses him of abuse

Former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens's (R) ex-wife has accused him of being abusive toward her and their children during their marriage.

The accusations came in a new affidavit from Sheena Greitens that was made public Monday in which she asked a state court to move their custody case to Texas, where she works, to avoid a harsher public spotlight on her children in Missouri, where the former governor is running for Senate. The couple split up in 2018 after Eric Greitens resigned from the governorship over allegations of an extramarital affair and sexual assault.

The affidavit contains several disturbing details, including that Eric Greitens bought a gun, hid it from his family and threatened to kill himself if his then-wife did not provide "specific public political support" prior to his 2018 resignation.

Sheena Greitens also alleged that her ex-husband grew physically violent with her and her children.

In 2018, allegations surfaced that Greitens had taken a compromising photo of his hairdresser during an extra-marital affair. An investigation by the Republican controlled legislature also revealed allegations of sexually violent behavior, including that Greitens tied his mistress to a pull-up bar in his basement and later forced her to perform oral sex on him.
In his final days as governor, Greitens allegedly purchased a gun and refused to tell his wife where he put it. He threatened to kill himself unless he provided her with public support, according to the Associated Press. He also allegedly “cuffed” his three-year old son across the face and dragged him by his hair, according to the Associated Press.
