(17,536 posts)The shooter had to be within nearly spitting distance of the tank. These have a range of about a quarter mile, leaving the shooter a far better chance of survival.

(17,912 posts)and even then it might not punch through the armor of a T-34. The Panzerfaust has come a long, long way.

(10,800 posts)The only downside is the 600 meter range. Still, a great tool to have in the box.

(13,582 posts)Big is not always an advantage. The lethality of these weapons may level the playing field.

(17,221 posts)I'm guessing the tip of these German anti-tank weapons are designed to penetrate cast iron.

(65,011 posts)...many armor piercing ordinance use an initial charge to shoot a stream of molten copper, on first contact.
The kinetic energy plus the high temperature create a hole & soft spot so the rest of the device goes inside the vehicle. It's there that the inertial trigger sets off the primary. In that confined space, it doesn't take a lot of HMX to kill everyone in the vehicle. Hence, all that can be done with a shoulder mounted weapon, since the charge doesn't weigh a whole lot.

(17,912 posts)The conical cone and appendage in the front is for aerodynamics and potentially guidance only. The business end is actually in the section just behind, with writing on it.
The general concept hasn't changed much since the original panzerfausts from WW2
instead of the explosion going off roughly equally in all directions, the explosive power is focused on a small point. Add some metallic liner to the outside of the explosive charge and you get the added benefit of a metallic plasma cutting a hole through armor. Makes tank driving no fun at all.

(45,433 posts)and they are around $10,000 or so each so significantly smaller and cheaper than Javelins or NLAWs. This things can do some damage.
I would not want to be a Russian tanker in Ukraine these days.

Then make it obvious which end is the wrong end to be looking at
I think this is a successful design.
